Warren Sapp gained a lot of attention when he decided to pursue a coaching career by joining the Colorado Buffaloes football staff.
However, it appears that the former Super Bowl champion’s first experience on the sideline has come to an end.
Warren Sapp Is No Longer Working With Deion Sanders
According to information from Brandon Krisztal (via Guerilla Sports), Sapp is not returning for a fourth season in Colorado.
This move aligns with internal changes and ultimately poses a significant tactical challenge for the Buffaloes.
Notably, the presence of legendary figures on the Buffaloes coaching staff was one of the main attractions for recruiting young talent heading into last season.

Recently, the Buffaloes had to deal with the departures of Robert Livingston (defensive coordinator) to the Denver Broncos and Domata Peko (defensive line coach) to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
In other words, the entire defensive staff structure was dismantled in less than two months.
Sapp had to meet strict academic and bureaucratic requirements, including completing his degree, to formally join the coaching staff in Boulder. The former NFL player even said in interviews that he was “addicted” to the work routine of providing instruction to young athletes.
Unlike a traditional defensive line coach (responsible for run containment and blocking techniques), Sapp’s focus as a PRC was on teaching players how to get to the quarterback. With his signature “five-step” technique, he became one of the most dominant defenders in Tampa Bay Buccaneers history as a player.
Colorado’s defensive line unit was criticized last season for allowing too many rushing yards and recording too few sacks. Sapp’s main goal last season was to transform the physical potential of athletes, such as newcomer Ezra Christensen, into on-field productivity, helping the defense sustain the team after the departures of stars such as Shedeur Sanders (who ranks No. 46 in the PFSN QB Impact metric with a F grade as a rookie) and Travis Hunter.
Sapp’s Departure at This Point Is Not Surprising
Given all the moves the Colorado team is making internally, Sapp’s departure at this point is not a surprise. Right now, there are no indications that any NFL team is interested in his services.
Meanwhile, the Buffaloes will need to find other coaches to address their main problems on defense. Those are defined as inefficiency in the pass rush and a lack of run-stopping prowess, as opponents averaged 5.2 yards per attempt last season.
