Super Bowl Champion Sends 8-Word Message As Jets QB Geno Smith Gets Cleared in Battery Investigation

The investigation against Geno Smith is now over, and the quarterback won't be charged. Darius Slay celebrated the outcome on X.

Geno Smith received good news at the start of the week. The quarterback, who was being investigated in Florida after a woman accused him of battery last month, was freed from the charges, with the police department telling ESPN that the investigation is no longer active.

Darius Slay Praises Geno Smith’s Dropped Police Accusations

Smith was accused of having an altercation with a woman and breaking her computer. The woman went to Instagram and posted a video, stating that the quarterback had allegedly assaulted her and saying that she would press charges.

But ESPN published an article on Tuesday stating that the police department of Davie, Florida, has decided to close the case, with the New York Jets quarterback not being pressed any charges. ESPN also revealed that “neither Smith nor the woman provided requested follow-up statement to police”.

After the article was published, former NFL cornerback Darius Slay, a friend of Smith, celebrated the news on X. He wrote, “Boy I tell ya!! Glad my dawg good” when quoting Adam Schefter’s tweet about the situation:

Slay recently retired from the NFL after spending 13 seasons in the league. He was a Super Bowl champion with the Philadelphia Eagles and finished his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2025. Slay was also a six-time Pro Bowler and was named first-team All-Pro once.

Smith and Slay have never played on the same team. They were, however, part of the same draft class. The cornerback was the 36th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions; the Jets took the quarterback three picks later.

Smith now returns to the team that drafted him and where he played for four seasons previously. He also had stints with the New York Giants, the Los Angeles Chargers, the Las Vegas Raiders, and the Seattle Seahawks. He was voted the NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 2022 and has made the Pro Bowl twice in his career.

Smith’s return marks a great redemption story for the quarterback. He lost the starter job in 2015 after being punched by a teammate over a money dispute for not attending an event. After the incident, he never recovered the starter job from Ryan Fitzpatrick, who played well in 2015 but struggled the year after.

In March 2026, the Jets sent a sixth-round pick to the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for Smith and a seventh-round pick. After a difficult year with Pete Carroll and the Raiders, the comeback story can represent a better finish than the one he got a decade earlier. But he has to play much better after earning a 64.7 grade from our PFN QB Impact Metric, ranking 35th out of 38 quarterbacks.
