Super Bowl Champion Takes Issue With Shedeur Sanders’ Pro Bowl Selection: ‘Cannot Reward Mediocrity’

Shedeur Sanders’ Pro Bowl inclusion has been questioned by a former Super Bowl champion, who called the selection a reward for “mediocrity.”

Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders has turned a late-season opportunity into a Pro Bowl appearance, but not everyone around the NFL is convinced he earned the accolade. Sanders was added to the AFC roster as a replacement for New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, drawing praise in Cleveland after a turbulent first year that began on the depth chart and ended with a starting role.

At the same time, at least one Super Bowl winner has publicly pushed back on the idea that his production merited a Pro Bowl nod.

Tyrann Mathieu Unimpressed With Shedeur Sanders’ Pro Bowl Selection

Tyrann Mathieu, a Super Bowl champion safety and veteran defensive back, weighed in on Sanders’ selection on his “In The Bayou With Tyrann Mathieu” podcast. Reacting to the news that the Browns’ rookie had been named to the Pro Bowl Games as an injury replacement, Mathieu focused on Sanders’ statistical line and argued that the league should be more selective when handing out postseason honors.

“We cannot reward mediocrity. … If you have more interceptions than touchdowns, there’s no way you should be rewarded,” Mathieu said, using Sanders’ touchdown-to-interception ratio as the central point in his critique.

His comments highlighted a broader debate over how replacement selections are made and whether certain positions, particularly quarterback, should require more stringent performance thresholds, even in a year affected by injuries and Super Bowl-related withdrawals.

Mathieu’s stance echoes frustration that can surface among players when Pro Bowl rosters are adjusted late in the process, which can open the door for candidates who did not match traditional Pro Bowl production levels.

Revisiting Sanders’ Rookie NFL Season

Sanders’ path to the Pro Bowl came at the end of a rookie season that took multiple turns. After entering the 2025 draft with expectations as a possible early-round pick, he slid to the fifth round, where the Browns selected him at No. 144 overall.

He began the year as Cleveland’s emergency quarterback behind Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel, but injuries and performance issues ahead of him on the depth chart eventually opened a door.

Sanders made his first career start in Week 12 against the Las Vegas Raiders and became the first Browns rookie quarterback to win his debut start since Eric Zeier in 1995. Over seven starts to close the year, he finished with 1,400 passing yards, 7 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Despite the uneven stat line, he was named to the Pro Bowl Games as a replacement for Patriots rookie Maye, becoming the first Browns quarterback to make the event since Derek Anderson in 2007.

In a statement after the announcement, Sanders emphasized gratitude rather than controversy. “Thank you God. I’m beyond excited and extremely grateful for all the love and support from the coaches, players, and fans,” Sanders said, via the team website. “This wouldn’t be possible without the support behind me. Still plenty of work to do.”

The Browns quarterback described the Pro Bowl experience as a valuable learning opportunity, noting that simply being around established veterans and fellow quarterbacks has been beneficial. He cited conversations with players, including seeing Joe Flacco again in the AFC group, as part of what he has “already gained” from the week.
