J.J. McCarthy’s night off in Denver was supposed to be routine. Instead, it’s got half the internet convinced his time in Minnesota is running out.
The Vikings quarterback sat out Friday’s preseason finale against the Denver Broncos with an ankle injury, the same one he picked up last weekend against the Ravens. ESPN’s Kevin Seifert reported that McCarthy took part in light practices Monday and Tuesday, then sat out entirely on Wednesday.
By kickoff, he simply didn’t feel ready to go. The team, according to Seifert, isn’t worried about any long-term damage. But fans aren’t buying the “nothing to see here” framing.
Social Media Reacts to Vikings Star J.J. McCarthy’s Uncertain Status
McCarthy’s first two seasons in Minnesota have been anything but smooth.
After the Vikings took him 10th overall in 2024, a torn meniscus forced him to miss his entire rookie campaign. In 2025, a high ankle sprain and a concussion limited him to just ten games, and a hairline fracture in his thumb forced him out of two starts early.
Something is just way off here. I think he gets traded.
He should be fighting for his life/career to play. https://t.co/tG30qrZ471

He finished the season ranking 34th among 38 quarterbacks in Pro Football Network’s NFL Quarterback Impact Rankings.
McCarthy, who lost the starting QB spot to Kyler Murray, has struggled at Minnesota so far, so theories naturally started flying around when he missed the preseason game against the Broncos.

“Something is just way off here. I think he gets traded,” Harrison Graham theorized. The “Chicago Bears Now” host also added that McCarthy “should be fighting for his life/career to play.”
There’s a non zero chance JJ McCarthy has played his final snap as a Minnesota Viking https://t.co/SXwBw6TmcV

Broncos insider Benjamin Allbright reacted to the news with two side-eye emojis, leaving readers to read between the lines.
YouTube analyst Garret Greenlee of Football Analysis suggested the door might already be closing on McCarthy’s Minnesota career. “There’s a non-zero chance J.J. McCarthy has played his final snap as a Minnesota Viking,” he posted.
Others jumped straight to trade scenarios, some more serious than others. The X account of the Air Raid Buffalo podcast tossed out a specific, mostly tongue-in-cheek proposal: “JJ to the Bills for a 7th. QB2 of the future.”

A Lions fan account, DLFP, offered a more blunt read of the situation, calling it a “translation” of what McCarthy is really saying: “Trade me.” BroTalk asked the question that a lot of people seem to be thinking. “He’s getting traded, isn’t he?”
Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell initially said that McCarthy would be Murray’s primary backup after naming Murray the starter.
But after an underwhelming display against the Baltimore Ravens and the subsequent injury, O’Connell changed his tune a bit, suggesting that Carson Wentz is now firmly in the mix for the No. 2 job.
Many believe the writing is already on the wall for McCarthy in the Twin Cities. With the regular season closing in, he has precious little time left to prove he still has a future with the Vikings.
