Stephen A. Smith Makes Concerning Prediction on Travis Kelce’s Future With Chiefs After Loss vs. Texans

Stephen A. Smith didn't mince his words against Travis Kelce's performance after his performance in the Chiefs' loss to the Texans.

Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce went viral for all the wrong reasons after a brutal fourth-quarter drop helped seal a 20–10 loss to the Houston Texans. With the Chiefs already hanging onto their playoff hopes by a thread, cameras caught the veteran tight end sprawled out on the turf in disbelief as the Texans celebrated around him.

And that picture of disbelief is enough for Stephen A. Smith to jump onto.

Travis Kelce Gets a Reality Check

The moment Kelce wanted back more than any this season came with the Chiefs trailing 17–10 and desperately needing a spark. Patrick Mahomes dialed up his trusted tight end on consecutive plays, hoping the old magic would kick in. Instead, Kelce tried turning upfield before securing the catch, bobbled it, and gift-wrapped an interception for linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair.

The turnover sucked the air out of Arrowhead, and the Chiefs’ already bleak playoff hopes somehow dimmed even further. By Monday morning, the moment had made its way to ESPN’s “First Take,” where Smith went straight for the big-picture verdict.

ā€œAs for their future sure-fire Hall-of-Famer Travis Kelce, I think this is the end for him,ā€ Smith said. “I think we all knew he just came back because of the way they went out in the Super Bowl against the Eagles.”

And, harsh as it sounds, Sunday night did his argument a few favors. Kelce delivered what many fans are calling the worst game of his career: one catch on five targets, two brutal fourth-quarter drops, and a season-altering interception.

Unless he posts eight-plus receptions in each of the final four games, Kelce is headed for his least productive season since 2015. His 60 catches for 727 yards already have him well below the 90-reception floor he hasn’t dipped under since 2017.

Analytics aren’t exactly building a case for him either. PFSN’s TE Impact Metric ranks him 27th among tight ends, grading him out at a ā€œB.ā€ Decent, but nowhere near the dominance that defined his prime.

He’s also barreling toward a fourth straight season without hitting the 1,000-yard mark. For Mahomes’ longtime security blanket, the statistical slide is loud.

Kansas City’s loss to the Texans dropped its playoff probability to just 15 percent. To make it in, they’ll have to win out and pray for chaos in the Wild Card race. That’s a brutal turnaround for a franchise used to dictating the AFC, not begging for help.

And whether Smith is right or wrong, Sunday night felt like a reality check. Not just for Kelce’s season, but for the question that suddenly feels impossible to dodge: are we watching the final chapter of his prime unfold in real time?
