Why Did Stefon Diggs Leave the Texans for the Patriots After Just a Season?

Diggs has made several stops during his NFL career and has found a way to be relatively impactful on all of his former teams. This is especially true for his time with the Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills before joining the Texans last year. He appeared on his way to being a useful wide receiver for his third consecutive team, but his campaign was abruptly cut short.

He then left Houston after just one year to go to New England and give them the desired upgrade to their wide receivers. He was asked about the reason for his decision and responded by explaining what happened during his short time with the Texans when addressing the media prior to their Divisional round matchup against the Patriots.

“Unfortunately for me, I got hurt, but fortunate enough I landed here. So, I feel like, growing pains, you learn from a lot of things that you go through. I trust where I am right now, where God’s placed me, and I’m I’m happy to be where I’m at. Learned a lot from it, though,” stated Diggs.

The star wideout appeared in eight games for the Texans last year, totaling 47 receptions on 64 targets for 496 yards and 3 touchdowns. He was well on his way to another 1,000-yard season, as he has done in seven of his 11 seasons overall, before a season-ending ACL injury ended his pursuit.

Despite his relative success through half of a season, Houston decided to move on from him, opening the door for him to join the Patriots. He bounced back with another 1,000-yard season in his first year with his new team, serving as their top wide receiver.

Diggs may be looking to prove a point to the Texans, if he hasn’t already, that they would have been better off keeping him than moving on from him. He will get the chance to do so when they meet for the Divisional round, and he will enter the contest impressively ranked fourth among all wide receivers in PFSN’s WR Impact Metric for this season.
