Having clinched the AFC East title and one of the top playoff spots, the New England Patriots now look to lock up the No. 1 seed in Week 18. In addition to fighting for a first-round playoff bye, Stefon Diggs has a special reason to play against the Dolphins: he could secure an additional $1 million in pay this weekend.
Stefon Diggs Close to Million-Dollar Prize for New England Patriots
To achieve this, the Patriots must win and have the Denver Broncos lose or tie, or tie if their rivals fall to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.
According to Overcap, Stefon Diggs’ contract promises a $500,000 bonus if he reaches 1,000 receiving yards in the regular season. With only 30 yards left, he appears likely to achieve this goal in the first half, earning a welcome bonus at the start of the year. Additionally, the WR can earn another $500,000 by reaching 90 receptions by Week 18. This is harder, as he still needs eight more and will need a sensational game at Gillette Stadium.
These incentive bonuses aren’t new to Diggs. He already earned an additional $500,000 for hitting 80 receptions in Week 17.
Regardless of whether he earns the bonus, Patriots fans have certainly enjoyed Diggs’ performance this season. Many questioned his condition after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery before the start of the season, especially considering he is 32 years old.
Diggs who ranks No. 4 in the PFSN WR Impact metric with a B+ grade, has proven himself to be an excellent leader both on and off the field, establishing himself as a key offensive reference and demonstrating excellent chemistry with rookie quarterback Drake Maye. Even though he does not lead the NFL in receptions or yards, his movement and intelligence in decision-making make him one of the best receivers in the league today.
The WR’s high level of play even raises the discussion about improving his contract, which currently guarantees only $22.6 million in a three-year deal worth $63.5 million. The Patriots also considered DK Metcalf and Brandon Aiyuk, but neither has made the same impact.
Inside Diggs’ Situation After Criminal Charges
Despite recent allegations of strangulation and other crimes, Diggs is still expected to play for the Patriots against the Dolphins in Week 18, as the NFL does not anticipate taking disciplinary action before then.
Stefon Diggs did speak today for the first time since the incident was reported.
“It’s definitely an open case, so I can’t even say anything about it.“

The NFL stated that both Diggs and defensive lineman Christian Barmore, who has been accused of domestic violence by his girlfriend, remain eligible to play for the Patriots this weekend. The league also stated that it is reviewing both incidents in accordance with the Personal Conduct Policy. If the NFL decides to investigate the cases, both players will be barred from practicing or playing.
