The Pittsburgh Steelers are definitely doing their homework on the quarterbacks in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft. Recently, three QBs have met with the Steelers for pre-draft visits. Could the Steelers look to pick up Garrett Nussmeier?
Garrett Nussmeier Among Quarterbacks Evaluated by the Steelers
The Steelers have been looking at several QB prospects leading up to the draft, especially Penn State’s Drew Allar, Miami’s Carson Beck, and Nussmeier. According to Brooke Pryor of ESPN, head coach Mike McCarthy and general manager Omar Khan’s QB wish list is “long arms, big hands and a knack for thriving in the cold weather.”
Nussmeier already has a connection to Pittsburgh, considering that his father, Doug Nussmeier, was the quarterbacks coach for McCarthy during his coaching days with the Dallas Cowboys. The ex-LSU QB was projected to be one of the top signal-callers in this QB class.
Unfortunately, an injury led to some underwhelming play and highlighted some weaknesses, especially his size and a tendency to be an overly aggressive passer at times.
ESPN analyst Ben Solak argued that Nussmeier would be a good fit for the Steelers. He said, “In that the Steelers need a developmental QB2 with more legs than 2025 sixth-rounder Will Howard, Garrett Nussmeier would be an option no matter what. The family connection only helps.”
It will be interesting where Aaron Rodgers ends up, considering that Rodgers had a pretty good season in his debut with the Steelers. Per PFSN’s NFL QB Impact metrics, Rodgers threw 24 touchdowns to just 7 interceptions. He threw for 3,322 passing yards and completed 65.7% of his passes.
The Steelers finished the 2025 regular season 10-7, won the AFC North, and made a trip to the postseason. However, they were squashed at home against the Houston Texans 30-6. It is still unclear if Rodgers will remain with the team. While the waiting game on Rodgers’ status may not seem promising, Steelers legend Jerome Bettis drew a bit of a silver lining.

He said, “There is an opportunity for our number two guy to get a lot of reps, a lot of opportunity, right? So there’s some positives to this, because you’re letting the young guys get an opportunity to run the offense and kind of learn the offense as they go.”
If Rodgers decides to stay with Pittsburgh, he would obviously be a good resource for Nussmeier to learn the offense and adjust to the speed of the NFL. It remains to be seen if the Steelers decide to choose Nussmeier in the draft, but they are definitely looking at this year’s QB class.
