Fans Accuse Wayne Rooney of Hypocrisy After Manchester United Legend’s Unsolicited Advice For Mohamed Salah

Wayne Rooney recently slammed Mohamed Salah for publicly claiming that he has been thrown under the bus by Liverpool.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has become the talk of the town following his bombshell interview on Saturday, Dec. 6. A number of former players and coaches have provided their two cents on the developing situation, Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney being one of them.

Now, fans have insinuated that Rooney was disingenuous with his comments on Salah. But, what did the former Everton and D.C. United striker say about the Egyptian’s antics?

Wayne Rooney Hits Out at Mohamed Salah For Liverpool Comments

During a chat on BBC Radio 5 Live’s ‘The Wayne Rooney Show’, Rooney claimed that Salah was wrong to publicly vent about his lack of game time at Liverpool. He also suggested that the Egyptian is the one who has thrown his club under the bus.

“I think it’s just absolutely disrespectful to his team-mates, to his manager, to the fans. I think it’s incredible that he came out with what he did. I think this season Salah hasn’t looked at his best, he hasn’t looked at his sharpest. I’ve been quite vocal about that over the last couple of months, and clearly Arne Slot has seen that, and he’s put him on the bench,” the Manchester United great said.

Rooney, who is Manchester United’s all-time top goalscorer, concluded, “And to have the arrogance to say that he doesn’t have to earn his place… you need to be at your best every week to try and stay in your team. That’s part of being in a team sport. And if I was one of his teammates, I wouldn’t be happy at all with what he said, because this is where Liverpool need him most, and if anything, he’s thrown Liverpool under the bus with his words.”

Fans Slam Rooney Following Remarks About Liverpool’s Salah

Accusing Rooney of being a hypocrite for his opinion on Salah’s interview, one fan wrote on X: “Didn’t you come within a signature of signing for (Manchester) City just to get more money?”

Another soccer fan tried to remind the Manchester United legend of the past, writing on X: “Didn’t you hand in a transfer request to get a new contract, Wazza?”

One fan offered words of advice to the ex-England international, posting on X: “Remember when Rooney threw United under the bus and allegedly handed in a transfer request? Yeah, I think you should sit this one out pal.”

Another fan echoed the collective sentiment and commented on X: “Ex-players love kicking a man when he’s down. Crazy part is they all went through the same stuff in their own careers, but instead of supporting each other they always pile on 😭”

Rooney, 40, played for Manchester United from 2004 to 2017, winning 17 trophies.
