MLS Commissioner Don Garber Tells Mohamed Salah To Consult Lionel Messi and Decide Transfer Amid Liverpool Fallout

MLS Commissioner Don Garber has urged Liverpool's Mohamed Salah to seek transfer advice from Inter Miami's Lionel Messi.

With transfer speculations about his future on the rise following last week’s fiery interview, Liverpool star Mohamed Salah is the talk of the town now. And Major League Soccer (MLS) Commissioner Don Garber has also shared his thoughts on the player’s situation.

But why has Garber namechecked Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi while speaking about Salah?

Mohamed Salah Told To Turn to Lionel Messi for Advice

During a chat with The Athletic, Garber chose to remain tight-lipped about the possibility of Salah moving to an MLS club in the near future. However, he suggested that the 33-year-old should seek transfer advice from Messi later on.

“I’ve seen some rumours about Mo Salah. We very much believe in the sanctity of a contract; that’s an American business dynamic. Mo’s under contract to Liverpool, people we know. It’s a great team,” Garber initially said during his recent interview.

Garber added, “Obviously, if he ever decides to come to Major League Soccer, we’d welcome him with open arms. I’d say he should reach out to Leo (Messi) and reach out to Thomas Müller and see how happy they’ve been and how successful they’ve been and how much they’ve really embraced being in Major League Soccer.”

According to the website mentioned above, Salah has recently drawn interest from MLS sides San Diego FC and Chicago Fire. The four-time Premier League Golden Boot winner has also emerged as a target for Saudi Arabian trio Al-Hilal, Al-Qadsiah, and NEOM SC in the recent past.

Lionel Messi’s Close Aide Asked To Take Pay Cut

According to AS (via X/@DeadlineDayLive), Inter Miami are keen to retain Luis Suárez, who is a long-time friend of Messi, with the Uruguayan’s deal set to expire later this month. The 2025 MLS Cup winners have submitted a contract bid, which could prompt the former Barcelona ace to accept a reduced salary.

Suárez, who will turn 39 next month, has helped Messi’s side lift a total of three silverware since arriving in January 2024. He has found the back of the net 42 times and recorded 29 assists in 87 appearances across all competitions for the Javier Mascherano-coached outfit.

The former Liverpool and Atlético Madrid player, who represented Uruguay 143 times, has also allegedly drawn interest from his boyhood club Nacional in recent times. He has already represented the Uruguayan team twice in his senior career, scoring 10 goals in 24 total games for them.
