Manchester United endured a difficult 2024-25 season, struggling to create scoring chances and failing to keep a clean sheet on most occasions. And, they opted to refresh their squad this summer, replacing first-choice goalkeeper André Onana with Senne Lammens.
Now, a pundit has insisted Onana still has a future at the Michael Carrick-coached team.
Manchester United Man Backed To Shine at Parent Club Again
During a recent interaction with Telecom Asia, former Chelsea and Real Madrid man Geremi suggested that Onana is not solely responsible for his struggles at the Red Devils.
“I know André very well and during his time at United, there were a lot of things that were not right. It wasn’t just him. And believe me, with the arrival of Michael Carrick, things are looking good for everyone, including him,” Onana’s compatriot commented.
Geremi, who helped Chelsea win two Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006, urged Onana to challenge Lammens at Manchester United after returning from Trabzonspor in July.
“He is clearly talented and his gifts are rare. The next thing is for him to go back there and fight for his spot. Andre has always excelled when faced with a challenge. He thrives when he’s given a fair chance to prove himself,” the 47-year-old former player added.
Geremi concluded by using his career as an example of grit, hard-work, and determination. The ex-Newcastle United star remarked,
“In my career, I enjoyed playing in teams with big ambitions, big personalities. If I had a few bad games, there was always someone knocking on the manager’s door asking for a chance. That meant I had to stand up, be counted and not walk away. But, that (fighting for his Red Devils spot) is for André to decide.”

Onana, 29, endured two difficult seasons at Manchester United before being sent on loan to Trabzonspor last September. He has registered 24 clean sheets in 102 total appearances for the Old Trafford outfit so far, conceding a whopping 150 goals in the process.
So far this campaign, the 53-cap Cameroon international has been utilized as Turkish team Trabzonspor’s primary shot-stopper. He has overseen four clean sheets in 21 games across all competitions for his current club, helping them launch a title charge, this term.
On the other hand, Lammens has shown signs of being Manchester United’s future No.1 goalkeeper this season. The 23-year-old Belgian has leapfrogged Altay Bayinder in the pecking order, keeping five shutouts in 22 overall outings for his side this season.
