Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo has been a hot topic of discussion in the recent past, more so after his half-brother donned a ‘Free Kobbie Mainoo’ shirt last month. And now, the player has reportedly made a decision about his future amid a lack of playing time.
Kobbie Mainoo Decides on Manchester United Future
According to The Sun, Mainoo is determined to remain at Manchester United in the ongoing winter transfer window. The 20-year-old midfielder is ready to make a success of his career at his club despite enduring a challenging 13 months under head coach Ruben Amorim.
Mainoo, who reportedly had a tense relationship with Amorim even before his half-brother’s public stunt, has played in just 302 minutes of club action this campaign. He last made the Red Devils’ starting lineup in an EFL Cup second round exit to Grimsby Town last August.
Since Amorim’s arrival in November 2024, Mainoo has played in only 40 matches across all competitions for Manchester United. He has started just 16 overall games under the former Sporting CP manager, registering two goals and as many assists in 1727 minutes of action.
Mainoo, who is reportedly a target for Napoli, has a contract with Manchester United until 2027.
Ruben Amorim Reveals Manchester United’s Stance on Transfers
During a pre-match press conference, Amorim stated that Manchester United are currently not in talks with any club or player over a potential transfer in the January window.
“The transfer window is not going to change. We have no conversations in this moment to have any change in the squad. There is a process, there is an idea, that is going to continue. We are near the places of the UEFA Champions League but we are near also eight teams behind us, so let’s focus on the next game, just that,” Amorim commented (via The Athletic).

Asked whether any of his players have spoken to him about potentially leaving this window, the Portuguese tactician replied, “No, nobody. I don’t expect them to come to me to ask (to leave).”
Despite Amorim’s claims, the Red Devils could sign a couple of stars this month. They have struggled of late due to the absences of Bruno Fernandes, Matthijs de Ligt, Bryan Mbeumo, Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, Mason Mount, Harry Maguire, and Mainoo.
Meanwhile, Manchester United are in sixth place in the 2025-26 Premier League table with 30 points from 19 games. They will face Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday, Jan. 4.
