Lionel Messi Could Be in Line for Career First As Inter Miami Co-Owner Chasing ‘Dream’ Competition

Inter Miami’s co-owner confirmed talks to add the club to a new competition, calling it a dream for Lionel Messi and the team.

Lionel Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023, and the MLS club’s fortunes have changed drastically since then. They went from never winning silverware since their inception to capturing a trophy in each of their last three seasons.

Inter Miami Could Be Playing in a New Competition This Year

The Eastern Conference side won the Leagues Cup within weeks of Messi joining, with the Argentine playing a key role in the competition. They followed it up with the MLS Supporters’ Shield in 2024 but failed to make a deep playoff run.

They went the distance in 2025, winning the MLS Cup, and also impressed in the FIFA Club World Cup. Their rise has led to a growing worldwide fan base, and players are also eager to join the club.

Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas has revealed that talks have taken place with CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez about including MLS sides in the Copa Libertadores. He wants his club to compete against South American giants and told Ole via GOAL:

“I would love to see the Club World Cup return so we can compete against the best clubs in the world. Obviously, a competition like the Copa Libertadores — I would love to see Inter Miami participate someday to compete against the giants of South America, a competition Leo hasn’t played in. Those are our aspirations.

“It’s a dream. I’ve had conversations with CONMEBOL and with Alejandro to see if participation in the Copa Libertadores is possible. There are precedents, because Mexican clubs have played in the Libertadores before. I would like to play in the Libertadores, I’ve said it, and I’ll say it publicly. I’ve also said it within the League.”

Mas believes the MLS champions should be given a chance to play in the competition, similar to how Liga MX champions earn a spot each season. He added:

“I believe that the MLS champions, like those of Liga MX, deserve a spot. I know these are matters between CONCACAF and CONMEBOL, but I think hemispheric soccer can continue to grow. With the participation of North American and Mexican clubs, I believe the competition would be better.”

Mas went on to state that the club’s immediate goal is to win the CONCACAF Champions League this season. Inter Miami is working to rebuild its squad this month following the departures of Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, who both announced their retirements at the end of the 2025 season.
