Liverpool have been scouring the market for a new defender of late, with defensive duo Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni injured now. And, one of the Reds’ targets has reportedly been approached by a Premier League club on the winter transfer deadline day.
Liverpool Target Subject of Late Bid From English Club
According to Het Laatste Nieuws, Crystal Palace are hoping to beat Liverpool in the transfer race to sign Club Brugge centre-back Joel Ordonez. They have submitted an offer of around $47 million to add the Ecuadorian defender to their ranks in the future.
However, Club Brugge have rejected the Eagles’ recent bid, as the Belgian side are unwilling to let go of Ordonez in the middle of the ongoing season. They could, however, offload their player this summer, as the star is keen to move to the Premier League.
Crystal Palace, who are 15th in the Premier League standings now, are expected to look for a new centre-back before the end of the winter transfer window. They are aiming to rope in a replacement for Marc Guehi, who joined Manchester City last month.
Meanwhile, Ordonez is likely to continue at Club Brugge in the 2025-26 campaign. The 21-year-old has started 24 of his 27 appearances across all competitions for his club this term, finding the back of the net once in 2,153 minutes of first-team action.

On the other hand, Liverpool have allegedly reached an agreement with Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais to sign defender Jeremy Jacquet in a potential $82 million move this summer. They have arranged a medical for the 20-year-old Frenchman on Monday, Feb. 2.
Opening up on the latest development involving Jacquet and Liverpool, Arsenal legend Paul Merson said on Sky Sports, “I find that extraordinary that he’s coming in the summer. They need a centre-half in now to fight for the top four or top five. So yeah, it surprises me. I’m majorly shocked. I don’t know why this kid is staying in France until next season.”
“Jacquet is a good signing for Liverpool. And, as a Chelsea fan, I’m shocked he hasn’t gone to Chelsea. I know Chelsea have got a lot of centre-backs but I think there’s a lot that need to come in and out of Chelsea in my opinion. But I am glad (Josh) Acheampong has stayed, I think he’s going to be a proper, proper player that kid,” Merson concluded.
So far, Jacquet has featured in just 31 total senior matches for his boyhood club, Rennes.
