Jurgen Klopp Set for Liverpool Return but Not To Replace Struggling Arne Slot

Jurgen Klopp, who was succeeded by under-fire Arne Slot in 2024, is set to return to Liverpool in a coaching role this year.

Jurgen Klopp is widely considered as one of the best Liverpool managers of all time, having coached the club from 2015 to 2024. Now, the German tactician is set to return to the Reds in a temporary role, not as a replacement for Arne Slot, in March this year.

Jürgen Klopp To Be in Liverpool’s Dugout Once Again

On Thursday, Jan. 29, Liverpool announced that Klopp will return for the club’s upcoming charity match against Borussia Dortmund Legends. The Reds’ Legends team will have the German as an assistant manager to Sir Kenny Dalglish on Mar. 28.

Klopp, who was replaced by Slot in the summer of 2024, will be joined on the touchline by club icons Ian Rush and John Aldridge, apart from Dalglish, during the charity match.

The former Dortmund manager helped in transforming the Reds during his eight-year stint. He guided the Merseyside team to eight trophies, including their first top-flight league title in 30 years, and oversaw 304 wins and 85 losses in 489 total games in charge.

Apart from lifting the Premier League title in 2020 and the UEFA Champions League trophy in 2019, Klopp won two EFL Cups and an FA Cup at Liverpool. He also helped them finish as Premier League runners-up twice and reach two Champions League finals.

Meanwhile, Slot is currently under pressure, with Liverpool in sixth spot in the league table this season. He has failed to guide his club to a single win in its last five league matches, fueling rumors that Xabi Alonso could succeed him soon.

Slot, 47, also appeared to take a dig at Klopp during a recent press conference. The former Feyenoord manager recalled how his side were playing in the UEFA Europa League, not the UEFA Champions League, under the German in 2024 on Wednesday, Jan. 28.

“We are happy that we are going straight away to the last-16… especially because it’s only two years ago that we were playing Europa League. And, we went out in the quarter-finals against Atalanta. So, two seasons in a row now being in the last-16. Last season, we were very hungry, and we will definitely be hungry for more this season,” Slot said.

Slot’s side qualified for the UEFA Champions League last-16 after registering a 6-0 win over Qarabag earlier on Wednesday. They finished the 2025-26 Champions League group stage in third place, having won 18 points from eight group matches.

The Reds will next be in action against Newcastle United in a league clash this Saturday.
