Ex-Liverpool Star Identifies Single Team Capable of Derailing Arsenal From Winning Champions League Trophy

Arsenal have been in red-hot form this season, but one former Liverpool star does not think the Gunners are the single favorites for the UEFA Champions League title.

Arsenal are in fine form in the UEFA Champions League this season and are touted as title contenders. However, one former Liverpool star-turned-pundit has named the one side that could stop the Gunners from achieving their dreams.

Arsenal Told To Fear PSG This Season

Mikel Arteta’s side has won seven of its first eight matches this season and has become the first side to qualify for the knockout stage. The Gunners have beaten Athletic Club, Olympiacos, Atletico Madrid, Slavia Praha, Bayern Munich, Club Brugge, and Inter Milan this season and have just one more match left in the league phase, against FC Kairat later this month.

However, Danny Murphy believes that Arteta’s side is not the favorite for the title this season. He heaped praise on the London side, saying that they have been brilliant in the Premier League and destroyed Bayern Munich in their game. He told Metro:

“They’ve destroyed Bayern Munich, one of the other strong teams in the tournament. They’re playing better than anyone else in the Premier League. I don’t think the Spanish teams are as strong as they have been in the past. When you look at what Liverpool did to Real Madrid, even when Liverpool weren’t playing well, and what Chelsea did to Barcelona.”

Murphy still does not see them as the red-hot favorites, picking PSG as the side that can go all the way. He has backed the European champions to retain their crown, claiming that the French side will be stronger in the second half of the season and will be the ‘joint favorites’ with Arsenal.

Murphy continued, “The only one that concerns me is PSG. I think once they get everyone fit, similar to last season, they could have a really strong second half. When PSG are at it and playing at their best, that’s a tough challenge for anyone. So they would probably be the other joint favourites with Arsenal at the moment because of their experience and because they won it last year.”

PSG won six of the seven trophies in the 2024-25 season, missing out only on the FIFA Club World Cup, where they lost to Chelsea in the final. The Ligue 1 side destroyed opponents and won the European treble for the first time in their history.

On the other hand, Arsenal have been trophyless in the last five seasons. Arteta’s only major trophy at the club has been the FA Cup, which he won in his first few months at the club.
