Shedeur Sanders Reacts to Browns HC Todd Monken Sparking QB1 Competition in Cleveland

Shedeur Sanders was asked directly about the possibility of not being QB1 for the Cleveland Browns in 2026 following Todd Monken's arrival.

The Cleveland Browns opted for a significant change for the upcoming season by betting on the arrival of Todd Monken, a head coach who could contribute greatly to Shedeur Sanders’ development in the league. However, the fact that the HC left the QB1 position open caught the fans’ attention.

Shedeur Sanders Opens Up About First Impressions of Todd Monken

During an appearance on “Up & Adams” on Tuesday, Sanders was asked about Monken’s comments regarding the starting quarterback position. The rookie made a point of emphasizing that he had a good first meeting with the new HC and chose not to get involved in any controversy about the QB1 position.

“We had a brief interaction, honestly. But I know that because I have this concern and this state of mind that I’m in, I’m capable of handling practically anything. So, I’m grateful to be here, grateful to have Coach Monken and to be able to connect with him, hear his perspective on the game, and see how he views the sport. I want to continue doing the same things, but with more,” said Sanders.

“Well, that’s to be expected. I think every day I have to prove my worth to everyone and to myself. It’s about having goals and achieving them, even small goals that will lead to long-term success. It’s about reaching your milestones in what you need to do, focusing more deeply on everything you want, and being in control of your life and what you do.”

Unlike a formal introduction, the first Monken meeting with Sanders revealed the familiarity of those who already share a history. This moment became a digital phenomenon, suggesting that the QB1 position may already have been decided behind the scenes.

Sanders Showed Highs and Lows with the Browns in His First NFL Season

Sanders, who ranks No. 46 in the PFSN QB Impact metric with a F grade and 56.9 Impact Score, had a difficult start in the NFL. Considered a first-round talent during his college career, the QB ended up being selected only in the fifth round by the Browns, as the 144th overall pick. He started his career as a backup, being the fourth option behind veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, as well as fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel.

However, injuries to the veterans and Gabriel’s instability allowed Sanders to take over as a starter in the final stretch of the regular season. In total, he played eight games (seven as a starter), with 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.

His best performance came in Week 14 against the Tennessee Titans, when he threw for 364 yards and 3 touchdowns, demonstrating strong chemistry with Cedric Tillman and tight end Harold Fannin Jr. However, the QB was under heavy pressure, taking 23 sacks.
