Cam Ward has already faced plenty of questions during the 2026 NFL preseason with the Tennessee Titans. The second-year quarterback has shown some progress in practice, while his production in preseason games has left room for criticism.
This mix has now spilled into a tense exchange with a local reporter. Reacting to this, Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe has shared his perspective on how Ward handled the conversation.
Shannon Sharpe Takes Issue with Cam Ward’s Exchange with Reporter
Ward’s preseason evaluation took an unexpected turn when Nashville radio host Jared Stillman asked him to assess his own performance on Thursday. Ward flipped the question back to Stillman, who did not hesitate with his answer.
Stillman said, “Not well.” Then Ward questioned, “You don’t think so?” and as Stillman doubled down, Ward said, “I’m glad you don’t think so. That’s good.”
When asked again, Ward offered his assessment and explained why he believes his preseason performance should not be viewed the same way as his regular-season play.

Ward said, “I assess it as, did we win the game or did we lose the game? I assess it as what I can get better at. I don’t assess it as someone who can get up there and operate when everything’s on. It’s a different process level. So it’s more of slowing down the game to everybody.
“And I believe we made a huge jump from Week 1 to Week 2 because we’re getting more condensed in the playbook. We’re not really opening everything up. And when we come to Week 1, I think it will be a different story.”
I asked Cam Ward how he would assess his preseason, his answer was to ask me how I would assess it..to which I said “not well.”

Sharpe addressed the exchange on his “Nightcap” podcast and said Ward needs to recognize that reporters are not there to support players.

“They got to realize the reporters aren’t fans,” Sharpe said. “They have a job to do. And sometimes, somehow, they’ve gotten confused when reporters do their jobs. His job is to critique and analyze. He’s like, okay, from his analysis, he hadn’t played well.”
Sharpe then walked through the exchange again before making his larger point about Ward: “He hasn’t played well. He hasn’t.”
Sharpe challenged Ward and Chad Johnson’s explanation that Tennessee has kept it’s preseason offense limited. He talked specifically about Johnson’s point that in the preseason, “everything is really vanilla.”
“If it’s vanilla, it’s vanilla for everybody,” Sharpe said. “And he hadn’t played well when its vanilla. So, what’s going to happen when it gets more complicated? When we start adding flavors, when we start swirling it up, then what are we going to do, Ocho? So, then when we say you haven’t played well, what are you going to say then?”
Sharpe’s co-host Johnson offered a different view, pushing back on the importance placed on preseason performances.
“I will wait till the season to get here. But that’s one of the goddamn problems in general is the goddamn reporters worried about how the (expletive) we look in the preseason. (expletive) don’t mean nothing. No disrespect.”
Ward finished last in PFN’s NFL QB Impact Metric for 2025 with an impact score of 61.6, and now his 57-yard performance against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1 and 69-yard performance against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2 point towards growing concern for the Titans.
His first two preseason games have produced 126 passing yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. However, his work against the Chicago Bears in joint practice has improved, as he went 19-of-30 with three touchdowns and one interception. He also connected seven times with fourth-overall pick Carnell Tate, including two touchdowns.
