Josh Allen led the Buffalo Bills to an impressive victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC Wild Card Round. The Bills are seeded as No. 6Â in this year’s playoffs, but this did not stop them from advancing to the AFC Divisional Round one more time. This year, however, there’s much more pressure on the team.
Bills Could Change the Head Coach if They Don’t Make the Super Bowl
Allen had a decisive performance, with three total touchdowns, as the Bills upset the Jaguars on Sunday. He had his first away playoff win during the occasion, but it’s not getting any easier. The Bills will play the Denver Broncos, the No. 1 seed in the AFC, in the Divisional Round.
Allen has a golden chance to win the conference in 2025. Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, and Lamar Jackson are all eliminated, with their teams failing to make the playoffs altogether. The Bills have made the playoffs every year since 2019. However, they still haven’t won the conference with Allen as their quarterback.
Another year without playoffs could represent major changes for the franchise. FOX analyst Danny Parkins was asked about what a loss to the Broncos on Saturday could mean for the quarterback, and his answer was direct: the Bills would start the 2026 season under a new coach.
“He gets a new coach. We would obviously ask the question. If Josh Allen has an amazing playoff game, and they lose the game because Sean McDermott’s defense lets him down, and we say ‘man, Josh Allen did it again, but let down by his defense’, you don’t think we’re asking a question about Sean McDermott?
McDermott has coached the Bills since the 2017 season. In his first year, he led the Bills to the AFC Wild Card, breaking an 18-year playoff drought for Buffalo. The team has made the playoffs in eight of his nine seasons; the only occasion without postseason for a team led by McDermott happened in 2018, when Allen was a rookie.
There’s no question about his success and his role in making the franchise a powerhouse in the AFC. However, his lack of playoff success is a major concern. He currently holds an 8-7 record, already including the win against the Jaguars. An 8-8 playoff record with Allen as your quarterback, and no Super Bowl appearance, could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.
With Allen leading the team, the Bills constantly had one of the best offenses in the league. On the other side, McDermott has a defensive background, but PFSN’s NFL Defense Impact Metric ranks Buffalo at No. 13. If there’s another failure on Saturday, a shakeup could be a great thing for all parts.
