When the Seattle Seahawks take the field at Levi’s Stadium against the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl, they’re going to be remembering their history in a very special way.
The Seahawks began playing in the NFL at the old Kingdome, with players like Dave Krieg and Steve Largent earning the respect and love of Seattle fans.
Why Are the Seattle Seahawks Wearing a Special Patch?
Seattle is paying its respects to franchise history, with players wearing a special “50” patch on their uniforms.
The Seahawks first entered the NFL world back in 1976. While the team didn’t put together a winning mark in that first season, Seattle has shown over the years that they can be competitive.
When NFL fans tune into Sunday’s Super Bowl game, they’ll be able to see the “50” patch very clearly on a Seattle player’s uniform. The Seahawks have put the patch on the top left of players’ uniforms.
To point out some notable parts of the patch, the “50” happens to blend in with the College Blue color worn in modern-day Seattle uniforms. But it also pays homage to those early years with a speck of Royal Blue in it as well. The “EST 1976” indicates when the franchise made its debut in the NFL.

Additionally, there are 12 feathers lined along the bottom of that patch. It’s there to pay honor to the rabid Seattle fans, known as the “12th Man.”
These Seahawks players know the franchise’s history is important. Seattle moved into its modern home at Lumen Field on July 20, 2002. Its previous names include Seahawks Stadium, Qwest Field, and CenturyLink Field.
Entering Sunday’s game, the Seattle franchise has an overall record of 417-376-1. They’ve made four Super Bowl appearances as a franchise, winning one. Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald hopes that he can help the franchise win its second Super Bowl title.
When Seattle fans think about the franchise, other names that come to mind include Russell Wilson, former head coach Pete Carroll, and the legendary “Legion of Boom” secondary.
The “50” patch will be something that these players can look at throughout Sunday’s game, knowing that they play not only for today’s players but those who paved the way for the Seahawks to get to the NFL’s promised land.
According to the PFSN NFL Offense Impact metrics, which are measured through the regular season, the Seahawks have an impact score of 79.8 and graded out to a C+.
Quarterback Sam Darnold, wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and running back Kenneth Walker III will do their best against a tough Patriots defense. Maybe the “50” patch will bring them good luck against the Patriots.
