As a handful of elite NFL players sit out of mandatory mini-camp awaiting new contracts, New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner looks to set an example. Amongst the big-name players sitting out are Cincinnati Bengals’ Trey Hendrickson, Pittsburgh Steelers’ T.J. Watt, Washington Commanders’ Terry McLaurin and several others.
Sauce Gardner Unfazed by Contract Dilemma, Focused on New York Jets Culture
After a 2024 season that saw the Jets go 5-12, Gardner and the defensive corps are determined to turn the tide. The 24-year-old displayed his determination by attending mandatory mini-camp despite the current contract dispute between him and the Jets.

“I just wanted to show my teammates, show my coaches how much I’m bought into this,” Gardner said. “I wanna win, I wanna change the organization, I wanna be a part of changing the organization.”
The former Cincinnati Bearcat hopes to be an influential piece in the near two-decade unsolved Jets puzzle. Along with Gardner, the Jets new-hires appear to be making a strong impact as well.
“We got a new regime, A.G. [Aaron Glenn], his whole coaching staff that he brought in, [Darren] Mougey, just great guys,” Gardner said. “I feel like Mr. [Woody] Johnson did a great job at getting those type of guys to be here. I feel like they’re doing a great job in changing the culture.”
Gardner’s praise of the Jets ownership comes even in the uneasy times. With the three-year pro’s 4-year, $33.45 million rookie deal nearing an end, he is eligible for his first extension. As one of the league’s premier young defenders, a large deal likely looms for Gardner.
Jets Defense Finishes Middle of the Pack in 2024
Although they only won five games in 2024, the Jets defense held their own. The Gardner-led defensive unit landed 15th, according to PFSN’s 2024 NFL Defense+ metric. Their placement comes ahead of several playoff-bound teams including the Commanders, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Buffalo Bills.
While their finish could have been worse, it was a step back from seasons prior. PFSN’s Sterling Xie elaborated on why the 2024 season was one of ultimate disappointment.
“The Jets regressed significantly after firing Robert Saleh, ending up at league average after ranking as a top-five unit each of the prior two seasons,” Xie said. “Prior to the Week 18 victory, this unit had posted four of their five worst grades of the season from Weeks 14-17.”
Now, the Jets look to get back to their top-five ranking under Glenn, another defensive minded head coach. The new man in charge led the Detroit Lions defense to a fifth-place finish using PFSN’s 2024 NFL Defense+ metric. Their success came as the Glenn-led defense operated without their top star Aidan Hutchinson for most of the season.
