Jets Star Sauce Gardner Reveals Latest Details on His Contract Situation Ahead of Training Camp

New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner says contract talks have been productive as he looks for an extension matching the NFL’s highest-paid corners.

With elite play at cornerback, Sauce Gardner has delivered for the New York Jets, matching the high expectations set for him. As he enters a critical contract year, the question is whether the Jets will step up with a lucrative extension.

Cornerback is among the toughest jobs in the NFL, requiring both mental toughness and physical skill. With receivers getting bigger and faster, the demand for top defenders like Gardner is only rising, and so is the cost to keep them.

New York Jets CB Sauce Gardner Opens Up About Contract Discussions

Average cornerbacks rarely start on the outside in the NFL. The nickel position can mask weaknesses, but playing outside demands at least one elite trait, whether it is speed, size, technique, agility, or instinct. Without that standout quality, it is hard to survive, let alone thrive, on the perimeter.

According to Football Reference, during Gardner’s three-year career, opposing quarterbacks completed just 55.3% of their passes when targeting him. He has given up only three touchdowns on 110 completions. Gardner does not just lock down one side of the field; he forces offenses to avoid him altogether.

Critics note that Gardner has only three interceptions so far. Still, coaches value his consistent impact on every passing play, not just his ability to pick off the ball. Entering his fourth season, the Jets have already picked up his fifth-year option, shifting the focus to a long-term extension. The two-time All-Pro discussed the situation as a guest on “The Pat McAfee Show.”

“My team and the Jets have been talking. We have our goals in terms of the contract. It’s been pretty productive. I’m aware that my peers like Jaycee Horn, Derek Stingley, and even Pat Surtain II had gotten paid, obviously before me. Those guys are all well-deserving of the money they got,” Gardner said.

Gardner wants a contract that matches his peers. Derek Stingley Jr. signed a three-year extension with the Texans for an average annual value of $30 million as of March 2025. Jaycee Horn’s new deal with the Panthers is worth up to $25 million per year.

Predicting future contracts is tricky with the market changing so quickly, but based on his production and impact, the Jets are likely to offer Gardner a deal similar to Stingley’s.

The main question is whether Gardner will accept a slightly lower annual salary for a longer contract, like Horn, or aim for a shorter, more lucrative deal that could set him up for another big payday in four years. Either way, the Jets appear ready to make Gardner one of the highest-paid cornerbacks in the league.
