WATCH: Behind-the-Scenes Look at Creation of Saquon Barkley’s Stunning Cover Photo for Madden 26

Saquon Barkley stars on the Madden NFL 26 cover after EA Sports recreated his viral hurdle, highlighting a dominant year for running backs.

The wait is over, and what most fans had already anticipated is now official: the iconic moment of Saquon Barkley leaping backward over a defender has been chosen as the cover image for Madden NFL 26. It marks the second year in a row that a running back has been selected as the face of the game.

Surprisingly, the moment that inspired the cover wasn’t just taken from game footage, it was fully recreated in-studio to capture the exact angle the production team wanted, and the behind-the-scenes video of the making-of is even more impressive than the cover itself.

EA Sports Recreates Iconic Hurdle From Saquon Barkley

The 2024 NFL season was defined in many ways by the Eagles. Barkley’s arrival in Philadelphia turned out to be one of the best moves in recent memory, twisting the dagger into the hearts of New York Giants fans while highlighting the brilliance of Eagles general manager Howie Roseman.

Barkley posted extraordinary numbers the regular season, surpassing 2,000 rushing yards and scoring 15 total touchdowns. But beyond the raw stats, his on-field performance was sensational. He produced countless highlight-reel plays, including one that instantly became a part of NFL history.

In Week 9, when the Eagles hosted the Jacksonville Jaguars in what seemed like a low-profile matchup, Barkley turned a routine checkdown from Jalen Hurts into a jaw-dropping play. Barkley leaped backwards over Jaguars cornerback Jarrian Jones in a gravity-defying moment, showcasing the kind of athleticism and improvisation rarely seen at any level.

The move looked like something out of a video game, and EA Sports took notice. Not only was the hurdle added as an exclusive animation in Madden NFL 25, usable only by Barkley and in specific in-game scenarios, but it also inspired the Madden NFL 26 cover.

However, the developers didn’t use the in-game footage from the actual play. EA Sports recreated the entire moment in their video-gaming studios, capturing the same essence in a cleaner shot without in-game distractions. The behind-the-scenes footage is incredible, with Barkley appearing to float in mid-air for a few milliseconds.

The running back looks frozen at the peak of his iconic leap. Jordan Schultz provided a link to the behind-the-scenes footage, saying: “Congratulations to a great football player and even better person! Nobody more deserving!”

49ers’ Christian McCaffrey ‘Passes the Torch’ to Eagles Star

This marks the second consecutive year a running back has been featured on the cover of the Madden NFL video game franchise. Once seen as a devalued position, the running back has enjoyed a resurgence in respect and relevance over the past two seasons.

In 2023, Christian McCaffrey was named NFL Offensive Player of the Year and earned a spot on the Madden NFL 2024 cover. One year later, in a symbolic gesture, the San Francisco 49ers star shared a video where he “passes the torch” to Barkley.

“Saquon, congrats man. Madden 26 for No. 26. It’s my honor to be passing down the Madden cover to you, keeping it within the running back family, we gotta keep it that way,” McCaffrey posted on June 2. “So fired up for you man, you’ve been pushing the standards since college, and to see all your success is no shock to me. Congrats man, enjoy it, and hope to see you soon.”

Madden NFL 26 is set to release on Aug. 14, and EA Sports is taking pre-orders.

Meanwhile, Barkley returns to the Eagles as the reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year as talk about Philadelphia starting “our dynasty now” rages on.
