Saquon Barkley has the golden opportunity to flip the narrative. Over the last few seasons, the cover athlete for the ever-popular EA Sports Madden game has gone on to have a far inferior season than the year prior. Even last year, Christian McCaffrey adorned the covers after a historic season, only to show up for a measly three complete games in 2024.
Could a change be imminent?
This round, the onus is on Barkley to break the curse. Coming off arguably the most incredible season for a running back in league history, Barkley, in one of his most iconic moves of the year, was officially revealed as the cover athlete for the sports game franchise. And his reaction is nothing short of heartwarming.
Saquon Barkley: The Madden 26 Cover Athlete
Barkley joined the Philadelphia Eagles last offseason via free agency. A couple of offseasons ago, the New York Giants extended quarterback Daniel Jones, which showed the team’s lack of interest in paying Barkley long-term.
Barkley responded by leaving the Giants for the division rival Eagles, then putting up a historic season en route to winning the Super Bowl. Barkley came within a hair of breaking the all-time regular season record and played with grace and unmatched style. The Eagles are on their way to becoming an NFL dynasty, and much of the credit goes to Barkley.

Although choosing a standout moment from his dominant season is hard, perhaps the most iconic moment came in Week 9 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. On a routine run, he spun halfway around before leaping backwards over Jaguars cornerback Jarriah Jones, hurdling completely over him before contorting.
The image is larger-than-life and was an instant iconic moment. So, it’s no surprise that the iconic leap would grace the cover for this year’s edition of Madden.
Barkley, of course, shared his reaction on social media.
“Hurdling onto the @EAMaddenNFL cover. Dream come true! Fly Eagles Fly,”.

“This last season, man,” Barkley could be heard saying, “Everything happening here that we were able to have as a team, win the Super Bowl, create iconic moments, it starts from imagination. Being a kid, having those moments, playing video games, and saying, ‘Why can’t I do it in real life?'”
In the clip, the Eagles standout can be seen recreating the image as he is suspended with ropes in the same position. Beyond spectacular plays, though, he also put up historic numbers.
Finishing the year with the most carries (325), rushing yards (2,005), and yards per game (125.3) was just a precursor to his work in the playoffs. Leading the Philadelphia attack, he finished the season with the most rushing yards in a single year, combined with the regular season and playoffs, in NFL history.
Additionally, a team that lost six of its last seven games in 2023 immediately catapulted to its second championship in franchise history, and the MVP candidate was at the center of the entire metamorphosis.
Barkley’s spot on the cover, the second-straight year of a running back adorning it, was well deserved. But now the next challenge, breaking the Madden curse, is upon him.
