What Did Laura Rutledge Say About the Sam Darnold Controversy?

Rutledge serves in several different roles for ESPN, including being one of their sideline reporters for Monday Night Football. The MNF broadcast team covered the Week 18 Saturday Night Football matchup between the 49ers and Seahawks, so she was on the field to report on the action.

This contest had high stakes, with the winner earning the number-one seed in the NFC playoffs. The Seahawks’ victory earned them a first-round bye and homefield advantage, while the 49ers will be either the five or six seed as a Wild Card team, depending upon the result of the Los Angeles Rams’ game against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

Rutledge approached Darnold for an on-field interview immediately following Seattle’s official clinching of the coveted top spot, as she often does at the conclusion of MNF games. Jon Root shared a video of their interaction and pointed out that it shows Darnold ignoring Rutledge when she’s trying to speak with him.

The ESPN reporter responded to the video and to Root, claiming that the quarterback was being rude. Rutledge clarified exactly what happened, and considering she’s the one implied to be the victim of these accusations, her first-hand account probably carries the most weight.

“You may have missed where I explained that I told Darnold to take his time talking to whoever he wanted to see because we had time before we were going off air. He was looking for Brock Purdy and was able to find him and then graciously did the interview,” explained Rutledge.

The sideline reporter disputed the claims that Darnold was being rude to her and even admitted that she had encouraged him to be himself and embrace whoever he wanted to before going live on-air for the interview. This appears to put an end to whatever controversy was being stirred up about the Seahawks quarterback.

He has been having an excellent season in his first year in Seattle, currently ranking 13th among all quarterbacks in PFSN’s Impact Rankings. He had a similarly impressive season with the Minnesota Vikings last year, but he will be seeking a different outcome this time after failing to win a playoff game in his first attempt.
