The Seattle Seahawks are the No. 1 seed of the NFC, and credit where it’s due, Sam Darnold has gone above and beyond to make it happen. The 3rd overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft has been an exceptional passer the entire regular season. But now, things are turbulent for the team, as a suspected injury has kept him out of practice just before the Divisional Round.
The 4,048-yard throwing quarterback was not here from the start. It is a journey he crafted with perseverance that made him the 18th highest-paid quarterback in the 2025 season.
Sam Darnold’s NFL Contract and Salary
Darnold was a force to be reckoned with in his college football era. Playing for the USC Trojans, he had amassed 7,229 yards through 2016 and 2017. The young genius had also led the team to a Rose Bowl victory, cementing his status as a first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
His NFL journey began with the New York Jets, who provided him immediate financial security with a guaranteed four-year, $30.25 million rookie contract. To top it up, Darnold also received a $20 million signing bonus. After 3 seasons with the Jets, his career trajectory started to fade as he was traded.
Darnold was traded to the Carolina Panthers in 2021. The team exercised his fifth-year option, paying him $18.85 million to play the 2022 season. But things did not pan out the way he wanted.
A preseason high ankle sprain kept him benched for the majority of the 2022 season. At the end of the 2022 season, he had only played 6 regular-season games and thrown for 1,143 yards. Across the first five years of his professional football career, he earned approximately $53 million. But this was just the beginning of the real transition.
Darnold decided to sacrifice pay for bigger things, visibility, and performance showcasing. In 2023, he joined the San Francisco 49ers as a backup quarterback, signing a one-year contract for $4.5 million. The contract didn’t pay him any money, but now he was part of a winning team. But this was not the final move to prove his worth.
In 2024, Darnold signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Minnesota Vikings and reentered the field as a starter. It was his breakthrough season. He threw for 4,319 yards, his career high, and even carried the team to the postseason. He came his jump to the upper-tier quarterback salary.
The Seahawks offered him a three-year, $100.5 million contract. Darnold signed it and got $55 million in total guarantees, along with a $32 million signing bonus. This was retribution, and he went on to make the team the top seeder of the 2025 NFL season.
Darnold’s Net Worth and Career Earnings
Darnold has earned approximately $104,253,948 in total cash at the beginning of the 2026 season. But his three-year contract projects this number to $167,253,948 by the end of the 2027 season.
Apart from his earnings from the sport, he plays in Nike cleats and also collaborated with Bose and Panini during his pre-draft time. But Darnold also supports organizations as a philanthropist.
The quarterback was involved with the Lowe’s Foundation while it celebrated SkillsUSA students, a group of students committed to skilled trades careers. He has also been an advocate for the Never Ever Give Up (NEGU) Jessie Rees Foundation for a very long time now. The foundation’s goal is to encourage kids fighting cancer.
In 2024, Vikings Center Garrett Bradbury was helping the Baller Dream Foundation. Darnold also tagged along, fulfilling the mission of providing emotional and financial support to children and young adults battling cancer.
Darnold said, “We did a camp with them, and a bunch of kids came out and they got to catch touchdowns from us. It was special. That kind of left a mark on me, to see how happy they were and how much joy we can add to their life.”
According to Spotrac, Darnold is the 18th-highest-paid quarterback of the 2025 NFL season. He is also the 13th-ranked quarterback with an impact score of 78.7 according to the PFSN NFL QB Impact Ranking.
