Although the New Orleans Saints have a below-average offensive line, star running back Alvin Kamara is still having a decent 2025 campaign thus far. Despite being 30 years old, it doesn’t appear Father Time has caught up to the five-time Pro Bowler quite yet. Pair this with how versatile Kamara is in the receiving game, and a handful of Super Bowl contenders would undoubtedly love to steal him away from the 1-4 Saints.
The Saints have plenty of motivation to trade Kamara in the near future, which includes future cap space problems, RB Kendre Miller taking on a bigger role, and the team’s uncertain future.
Will the Kansas City Chiefs Opt for a Committee Backfield by Trading for Alvin Kamara?
Quarterback Spencer Rattler has shown no signs of being the face of the franchise, so this season could signal a full reset that includes cutting ties with Kamara and star wide receiver Chris Olave.
Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox predicts a conditional 2026 fourth-round pick is the return New Orleans could find for Kamara. He lists the Super Bowl-contending Kansas City Chiefs as a potential landing spot.
“While keeping standout running back Alvin Kamara would help keep the Saints competitive and allow them to continue evaluating quarterback Spencer Rattler,” Knox wrote. “Trading the 25-year-old would also make sense.
“Moving Kamara, who has recorded 17 receptions for 360 scrimmage yards and a touchdown, would likely bring a quality return. That’s relevant because the Saints may dive back into the quarterback market next year if Rattler or rookie Tyler Shough can’t solidify the position,” Knox concluded.
The Chiefs need to take action to turn their season around, as they have a 2-3 record and currently sit in third place in the AFC West. For a team that has reached the Super Bowl five times this decade, this is an incredibly disappointing start. While star WR Rashee Rice will return from his suspension in Week 7 against the Las Vegas Raiders, that alone may not give the offense the boost it needs.
According to PFSN impact scores, Kamara could indeed take over as the RB1 in Kansas City, given his 76.3 impact score. Still, Kareem Hunt (75.7 impact score) and Isaiah Pacheco (73.4 impact score) are far from mediocre. Adding Kamara to the mix would ensure there is almost always a fresh set of legs next to Mahomes in the backfield.
Kamara has also demonstrated the ability to completely control a game in the past, which could prove beneficial later in the season and in the playoffs.
Will the Saints Actually Trade Kamara?
It’s worth noting that Kamara doesn’t want to be traded, as NFL Network Ian Rapoport revealed on Saturday afternoon. While the Saints are getting calls about him, the star running back has made it clear that he wants to remain in New Orleans.
“While New Orleans will continue to get calls — and time will tell how receptive they are to trading starters — Kamara isn’t expected to go anywhere,” Rapoport reported. “Sources say Kamara told Saints general manager Mickey Loomis that he’d like to remain with the franchise through the rest of his career, which was the goal when he signed a two-year, $24.5 million extension last October. Kamara is signed through 2026 and will have a decision to make prior to next season about if he wants to continue playing.
“Loomis approached Kamara in a proactive way when the team was getting calls about his potential availability. Loomis wanted to treat one of the faces of the franchise the right way. Loomis informed the homegrown player of interest elsewhere and wanted to be transparent. The question was simply: Would you want to go? Kamara expressed his preference to stay in New Orleans, the team that selected him in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.”
In a separate article, Rapoport reported that the Chiefs are making calls about a RB trade along with the Los Angeles Chargers. The NFL trade deadline is Nov. 4, 2025, at 4 p.m. ET.
