Iconic NFL head coaches Bill Belichick and Bruce Arians compiled stellar resumes across their NFL careers, and former tight end Rob Gronkowski weighed in on their styles. Both coaches have stepped away from coaching in the league, plying their refined skills elsewhere in the football world.
Bruce Arians Isn’t As ‘Tense’ As Bill Belichick, Says Rob Gronkowski
Belichick last coached in the NFL in 2023, when a 4-13 run with Mac Jones under center marked his last hurrah in the pros. Arians, on the other hand, stepped down as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2022 and has since served in the front office as a senior football consultant.
Both icons had very distinctive approaches to the game they love, and Gronkowski, who played as a tight end for both, recently commented on their biggest differences.
“Coach Belichick was more hands-on,” Gronkowski said on “4th & South.” “A little bit more discipline. BA definitely had some discipline to him, too, but it was a different style — not as intense and hands-on as Belichick.”
‘Gronk’ saw his most successful years under Belichick with the New England Patriots, winning four Super Bowls alongside the legendary Tom Brady. Nine years in Foxborough taught the tight end a lot about the head coach, who had already spent 35 years in the pros by the time the tight end was drafted.
“The big difference was Belichick is more of a special teams, defensive guy. He dipped his hands into the offense every once in a while. He was harder on you when you didn’t do something right because he expected it out of you, even though he wasn’t part of the offense. He wasn’t telling you what to do, but when you’re not playing up to par, he’d get on you.”
Gronkowski spent the final two years of his career in Tampa — thanks to Brady — winning one last Super Bowl with the quarterback. It didn’t take long for him to learn about Arians’s ways.
“BA was teaching you the offense,” Gronkowski said. “He was more laid-back, but he was an offensive-minded guy, more hands-on with the offense… That was the true difference — I had an offensive-minded coach with BA, and Belichick was more about keeping you accountable on the offensive side.”
To date, Belichick remains one of the greatest defensive minds in NFL history. Running the Patriots’ defense for 24 years, with Josh McDaniels mostly as offensive coordinator, Belichick constructed the most famous dynasty in league history.

While he has since become head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels in college football (76.8 PFSN CFB Defense Impact last season), Arians has been helping to build the Bucs into a Super Bowl contender.
