Ricky Pearsall Injury Update: What’s the Latest on the 49ers WR, and Will He Play in Week 8?

Ricky Pearsall’s Week 8 hinges on practice clearance. Will the 49ers get their young receiver back against Houston?

The San Francisco 49ers’ receiving room is still in flux, and Ricky Pearsall’s status is the key variable. As the 49ers turn the page to Houston, the second-year wideout remains under daily evaluation after a knee issue has kept him out of three straight games.

Latest On Ricky Pearsall’s Injury Status

Pearsall injured his right knee in Week 4, landing hard while attempting a catch. Initial team guidance indicated a minor PCL involvement, the type of injury that often responds within two to three weeks when a player clears speed and cutting benchmarks. Instead, his absence has stretched longer.

He did not practice at all in Week 7 and was ruled out well before kickoff against the Atlanta Falcons. Coming out of that win, Kyle Shanahan said the 49ers will keep monitoring Pearsall ahead of Week 8, with clarity expected as the practice week opens.

The team’s messaging has been consistent. The knee has not worsened, but wide receiver is a position that demands full-speed running and a clean change of direction before a return. That has kept Pearsall on the sideline while others have shouldered the load. With Pearsall and Marquez Valdes‑Scantling out last week and Skyy Moore limited, Jauan Jennings and Kendrick Bourne led the rotation, while Demarcus Robinson, Malik Turner, and Moore mixed in.

The 49ers will again anchor Pearsall’s timeline to participation — a limited session signals progress; full participation is the step that typically precedes a game-day decision. Pearsall’s return would give San Francisco a chance to lift third-down rhythm and red zone consistency once he clears practice and medical benchmarks.

Will Ricky Pearsall Play in Week 8?

As of Thursday, Pearsall has not returned to practice, and his Week 8 status is to be determined. Shanahan noted Monday that the franchise will keep monitoring him and provide an update by the first injury report of the week.

First, he needs to get on the field, even in a limited capacity, to test straight-line sprinting and cutting at game speed. Second, the medical staff will evaluate the post‑practice response the following day. If Pearsall strings together positive days without a setback, the team can consider moving him back into the game plan. If he remains a non‑participant, he will be unlikely to dress against the Texans.

San Francisco has adapted in his absence by leaning on size and physicality at the catch point and by using tight ends to stabilize the middle of the field. That approach worked against Atlanta, but the staff would welcome Pearsall’s route quickness and separation skills once he is truly ready.

The 49ers will continue to treat his knee as a week‑to‑week matter. Pearsall can rejoin the rotation in Week 8. If not, the timeline extends, and San Francisco will again distribute snaps among Jennings, Bourne, and the depth group while Pearsall keeps progressing toward a return.
