Ricky Pearsall Injury Update: Will Fantasy Managers Get the 49ers WR Back Week 8?

Ricky Pearsall's knee injury continues to linger. Is the 49ers wide receiver closing in on a return in Week 8? Or will fantasy managers have to continue waiting?

The San Francisco 49ers continue managing a lengthy injury list as they prepare for this weekend’s clash with Houston. Ricky Pearsall is dealing with a knee concern that has now sidelined him for three consecutive weeks. What was initially expected to be a minor setback has turned into a prolonged absence for the promising second-year receiver. As fantasy football managers await answers, will Pearsall finally return to action for Week 8?

Ricky Pearsall Injury Update

Pearsall suffered his knee injury during Week 4’s disappointing loss to Jacksonville when he landed hard on the ground while attempting to make a reception. The 24-year-old initially tried to compete through the discomfort but was ultimately unable to continue.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated that the team needed to thoroughly evaluate Pearsall’s condition, explaining that their initial assessment suggested a minor PCL injury after he hit his knee hard on the ground. Minor PCL injuries typically require two to three weeks of recovery time, which initially aligned with Pearsall’s expected timeline.

However, his absence has now extended into a fourth week, suggesting the injury has been more stubborn than originally projected. What was initially supposed to be a one-to-two week absence has lingered far beyond expectations.

At no point over these past three weeks has Pearsall even looked close to practicing. He missed all practice sessions leading up to Week 7’s game against Atlanta and was ruled out well before kickoff.

The extended timeline creates uncertainty heading into Week 8 preparations. Wednesday marks the first practice of the week, and Pearsall’s participation level will serve as a crucial indicator for his availability. If Pearsall cannot at least get in a limited practice session, he will once again be trending toward not playing against Houston.

Coach Shanahan noted Monday that both Pearsall and quarterback Brock Purdy will be monitored throughout the week before determining their status for Sunday’s game. While this is better than a negative report, the fact that Pearsall isn’t clearly trending toward a return is not a great sign for his status.

The uncertainty surrounding both players highlights the ongoing challenges San Francisco faces with key offensive weapons.

Unsurprisingly, Pearsall did not practice on Wednesday. Players coming off missed games who do not get in at least as limited session on Wednesday almost never pay. It is safe to assume Pearsall is going to miss another week. It is equally safe to assume he is not close to returning. Do not expect him back in Week 9 or even Week 10 at this point.

Pearsall Fantasy Outlook

Pearsall had emerged as the team’s leading receiver before his injury, totaling 20 receptions for 327 yards through the first four games. His 16.4 yards per reception average led all 49ers receivers with significant targets, and he ranked as the fifth-best wide receiver in the NFL according to advanced metrics.

The timing of his extended absence has been particularly challenging for San Francisco’s depleted receiving corps, though the situation has improved significantly in recent weeks. Jauan Jennings looked much healthier last week against Atlanta and should continue to improve as he works his way back from ankle and rib injuries.

Most importantly for the 49ers’ offensive outlook, George Kittle made his return from injured reserve after missing five games with a hamstring injury. The All-Pro tight end played a prominent role in jump-starting the run game during Sunday’s victory, even though he didn’t record a catch for the first time in 114 games.

When Pearsall eventually returns, he will face significantly more target competition than when he left the lineup with Kittle and Jennings back.

The depth chart has shifted considerably during Pearsall’s absence. Jennings has established himself as a reliable target when healthy, while Kendrick Bourne has had a late-career renaissance. This competition for targets could limit Pearsall’s immediate fantasy impact upon his return.

Despite the increased competition, Pearsall’s role as the team’s primary deep threat remains valuable for fantasy purposes. His 15.9-yard average depth of target compared to Jennings’ 9.8 yards shows his unique skill set within the offense. Those downfield routes require connection with the quarterback and the ability to adjust on the fly to track the ball.

Fantasy managers should not assume Pearsall returns in Week 8 given his continued practice absences and the uncertainty expressed by the coaching staff. The extended timeline suggests he may need several more days before being ready for game action, making Week 9 or beyond more realistic targets for his comeback.
