‘He’s About to Resign’ — NFL World Reacts to Patriots Scheduling Surprise Mike Vrabel Presser Amid Dianna Russini

The Patriots scheduled a surprise Mike Vrabel presser amid the Dianna Russini scandal, fueling speculation the HC may resign before the NFL Draft.

The New England Patriots have been having a hard time with off-field drama, and their already turbulent week took another dramatic turn just hours before the 2026 NFL Draft. With head coach Mike Vrabel at the center of an escalating controversy involving former NFL insider Dianna Russini, attention has remained firmly off the field.

As new bombshells and images continued to circulate, the organization made a last-minute adjustment to its NFL Draft media schedule. Vrabel will now address the media once again at 7:20 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. ET. That surprise decision immediately caught the attention of the NFL community. Instead of calming the situation, it only intensified speculation about what might come next.

NFL World Speculates Mike Vrabel May Resign Due to Surprise NFL Draft Presser

The situation escalated when ESPN’s Mike Reiss shared an unexpected update regarding Vrabel’s availability.

“Update to the Patriots media schedule: Mike Vrabel will address reporters prior to the start of tonight’s draft at approximately 7:20 or 7:30 p.m. in the media workroom,” Reiss posted on X.

The timing of the announcement, just before the draft begins, raised eyebrows, especially given the ongoing scrutiny surrounding Vrabel’s situation, with calls mounting for his resignation. It seemed that Vrabel spoke to the media on Tuesday to avoid this exact situation, so it’s a bit odd that he will now be addressing the media once again in a surprise twist.

The NFL world immediate reacted and had questions. Longtime radio host Glenn Ordway questioned the organization’s handling of the moment, “Apparently the Crisis Management team is ready to screw this thing up more…” Ordway noted.

His comment reflected a broader belief that the Patriots may risk worsening the situation by putting Vrabel in front of the media at such a sensitive time.

Others went further, speculating about the implications of the press conference itself. Veteran sportscaster Chris Williamson suggested a potential turning point could be imminent.

“Yeah he’s about to resign man IMO but I could be way off,” Williamson posted. That sentiment quickly gained traction among fans, with one influencer adding, “Oh my god if he resigns…” as anticipation built around the possibility of a major development.

Not everyone believed the appearance was necessary. Sports writer Dan Kelley openly questioned the decision, stating, “Does anyone really want or need to hear from Mike Vrabel? This is, as my teenagers would say, cringe.”

Meanwhile, podcaster Farzin Vousoughian shared a reaction GIF bracing for what could unfold, capturing the uncertainty and the legit update that will be announced about the entire situation.

Earlier today, the Patriots released an official statement backing their head coach. The organization emphasized support for Vrabel’s personal priorities.

“The New England Patriots fully support Mike Vrabel’s decision to prioritize his family first, as well as his own well-being,” the Patriots statement noted, via ESPN’s Adam Schefter. “Mike has been open with us about his commitment to being the best version of himself for his family, this team, and our fans, and we respect the steps he is taking to follow through on that commitment.

“We are confident in the leadership and communication Mike has established with our personnel staff throughout this pre-draft process… Eliot Wolf and his personnel staff are prepared to execute our draft as planned this weekend.”

On Thursday afternoon, new photos surfaced showing Vrabel and Russini kissing in 2020 at a bar New York City. This comes after additional photos leaked on Wednesday night showing the pair alone at breakfast in Arizona.

Russini has since resigned from The Athletic amid an internal review, while Vrabel announced he would step away temporarily to seek counseling and spend time with his family, so he will not be available on Day 3 of the NFL Draft.

With the Patriots holding 11 picks in this year’s draft, including eight on Day 3 when he won’t be around, the focus should be on roster-building. Instead, uncertainty continues to cloud the franchise’s immediate future.
