The NFL offseason rarely lacks drama, but the latest twist involving Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini has taken things to another level. What started as viral photos and speculation has now circled back to something much older, and potentially more revealing.
A resurfaced timeline involving Tom Brady and the Tennessee Titans has many wondering whether Vrabel and Russini’s alleged relationship may have influenced behind-the-scenes reporting or even NFL trade talks.
Why the Resurfaced Tom Brady Report Involving Mike Vrabel, Dianna Russini Suddenly Feels Different
On Thursday afternoon, Page Six released new exclusive photos of Vrabel and Russini from six years ago. They appear to show an intimate moment between the then-Titans head coach and then-ESPN reporter at a New York City bar from March 11, 2020.
As Underdog NFL dug up, Russini reported just four days later that the Titans were not pursuing Brady and were instead focused on re-signing Ryan Tannehill.

At the time, that report felt like standard insider information. But now, it’s being looked at in a completely different light.
The timing between the New York Post photos and the Brady scoop certainly has people connecting the dots, as we just got a major hint about whom Russini’s source was for the Brady news.
Dharya Sharma, a Titans content producer and writer for The Sporting News, retweeted Underdog NFL’s post, writing, “6 years ago???? Holy sh*t.”

This suggests that Vrabel has been a consistent source for Russini dating back years, which could reshape how people perceive Russini’s past reports tied to the Titans and now the Patriots, including her recent reporting on the A.J. Brown situation given New England’s interest in the Philadelphia Eagles star.
Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk argues that Russini’s ESPN reports must now be investigated, just as The Athletic is doing with her reporting. He also alleged that Russini may have been using her scoops to help Vrabel in trade negotiations.
“In May 2021, Russini reported that the Falcons ‘have discussed several offers for wide receiver Julio Jones, including an offer of a future first-round draft pick.’ The report, under a headline that proclaimed ‘Atlanta Falcons have offer of a 1st-round pick for Julio Jones, sources say’ created a clear impression that the Falcons had an offer in hand of a first-round pick for Jones,” Florio wrote.
“Her report also downplayed the Titans’ chances of landing Jones, calling them a ‘long shot.’ (At the time, Vrabel served as head coach of the Titans.) Ultimately, the Titans acquired Jones and a 2023 sixth-round pick for a 2022 second-round pick and a 2023 fourth-round pick. So how did the reporting potentially help the Titans?
“Putting out the word that the Falcons had been offered a first-round pick could have had a chilling effect on any team that may have been considering offering a second-round pick. Calling the Titans a ‘long shot’ allowed them to maneuver quietly for Jones. Given the relationship between Vrabel and Russini, it’s not crazy or reckless to wonder whether her reporting was directly or indirectly connected to the effort to help the Titans get Jones on the best possible terms. Which, of course, will bolster suspicions by Eagles fans that she had been working more recently with Vrabel to get Eagles receiver A.J. Brown on the best possible terms.”
Fallout Hasn’t Reached Vrabel’s Job Status With the New England Patriots
While the speculation has picked up online, the situation inside the building has been much calmer. The controversy initially exploded after photos of Vrabel and Russini together at a hotel in Arizona spread across social media. What was described publicly as a chance encounter quickly became something much bigger in the public eye.
Russini eventually stepped down from her role at The Athletic, maintaining that there was no deeper story beyond what had been shared. Both she and Vrabel are married, which added another layer to the scrutiny as the story spread.
Behind the scenes, Vrabel addressed the situation directly with players and staff. The focus, at least internally, has remained on football. There were also reports that Robert Kraft was involved early in trying to contain the situation before it became public.
Despite the controversy, the league is not investigating Vrabel, and there has been no real momentum toward discipline.
That decision is not surprising when you look at the bigger picture. Vrabel just led the New England Patriots from a 3-14 season to 14-3 and a Super Bowl appearance, their first since the Brady era, results which tend to quickly quiet external pressure.
