Mia Bieniemy, the wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, was shot on the evening of July 26 at the couple’s home in Virginia, according to ESPN’s Nate Taylor.
The 57-year-old has been hospitalized and is being treated for serious injuries, though authorities have not released details about the circumstances of the shooting.

At the time of shooting, Bieniemy was hundreds of miles away at the time, attending the Chiefs’ training camp at Missouri Western State in St. Joseph, Missouri.
According to ESPN’s Nate Taylor, the Chiefs are “aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family,” but have not released a statement yet.
The news sent shockwaves across social media, and Natalie Spala, a sports anchor and reporter for 7News in Washington, D.C., shared ESPN’s Adam Schefter post on X and wrote, “What on earth? This is awful.”

Taylor later confirmed that Mia is “in stable condition.”
According to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, “Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, of Ashburn, was arrested and charged with Malicious Wounding, Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, and Discharge of a Firearm Inside of a Dwelling. He was transported to the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center where he was held without bond.”
The investigation is ongoing, and there is not believed to be any threat to the public.
The timing makes the situation especially difficult for Bieniemy, who returned to Kansas City in January after a three-year journey away from the franchise. Following his departure in February 2023, Bieniemy spent one season as the Washington Commanders’ offensive coordinator, one year at UCLA running the Bruins’ offense, and the 2025 campaign as the Chicago Bears’ running backs coach.

None of those stops matched the success he had enjoyed with the Chiefs, where he helped orchestrate one of the most dominant offensive stretches in NFL history from 2018 to 2022.
During that first tenure as offensive coordinator, according to PFN’s Offense Impact Metric, the Chiefs had five straight finishes as a top-five offense in the league, and ranked as the best in 2018 and 2022.
Patrick Mahomes won both of his MVP awards and two Super Bowls under Bieniemy’s guidance, and the Chiefs’ offense was widely regarded as the most dynamic unit in football throughout that run.
Matt Nagy’s contract expired after the 2025 season, and head coach Andy Reid moved quickly to bring his former coordinator back into the fold. For Mahomes, getting Bieniemy back means reuniting with the play-caller who helped unlock his best football. The on-field reunion carries real weight for a Chiefs offense that regressed after Bieniemy’s initial departure.
Now, just days into training camp, Bieniemy is facing a deeply personal crisis that no amount of football preparation could account for. The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing, and neither the Bieniemy family nor the Chiefs has offered additional details.
