When the San Francisco 49ers take on the Atlanta Falcons in a primetime Sunday Night Football clash in Week 7, the two teams are going to be coming in with drastically different outlooks. For the former, the season hasn’t gone even remotely according to plan thanks to a plethora of injuries up and down the roster. On the other hand, the latter is riding high after registering consecutive victories over the Washington Commanders and the Buffalo Bills.
It isn’t going to be an easy task for either team to pull off a victory, though. The Falcons, with a top-10 defense in the league, per PFSN’s Defense Impact, have proven they can hang with anyone. But even the injury-riddled 49ers have given stiff competition to the likes of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and even pulled out a victory over the Los Angeles Rams. However, with the NFL world’s focus on them, the league will strive to ensure that there is no additional controversy from the game, at least on the refereeing front.
Referees for 49ers vs. Falcons
A conversation that has continued to dominate discussions around the NFL hasn’t shown any signs of quietening down over the first six weeks of a new season. A referendum on referees and their work during the games has been in the spotlight continuously.
With the physicality and the speed at which the games are played, the officials can’t be 100% accurate. But with the advent of social media, each inaccurate or even questionable call is put under a far brighter spotlight.
That becomes a bigger issue as the stakes of a game increase. When the Niners battle the Falcons, the sole focus of the football world is going to be on them as they take over the Sunday Night limelight.
As a result, the NFL will strive to minimize any such issues by appointing Ron Torbert as the referee in charge. In his 12th season as a referee, Torbert and his crew haven’t been shy when it comes to calling penalties.
Through five appointments, they have dished out 88 penalties, tied for the fourth-highest mark in the league. However, on a per-game basis, that number worsens, as it is the second-highest among all crews this season.

However, Torbert’s experience precedes him. A side judge since 2010, he earned the referee stripes in 2014, becoming just the fifth African-American to hold the position. Currently, that number sits at eight.
He is a name that the NFL has regularly trusted in big spots. In the last five years, he has served as the referee for two Super Bowls, including Super Bowl 56 and Super Bowl 59. His crew for the season is as follows:
- Umpire: Barry Anderson
- Down Judge: Frank LeBlanc
- Line Judge: Brian Bolinger
- Field Judge:Â Ryan Dickson
- Side Judge: Keith Washington
- Back Judge:Â Courtney Brown
- Replay Official: Kevin Stine
- Replay Assistant: Marty Abezetian
