It’s been a tough week for sons of NFL Hall of Famers. With Shedeur Sanders falling hard in the 2025 NFL Draft and Shilo Sanders going undrafted, a message has been sent that a legendary bloodline isn’t always enough to earn a roster spot.
However, the cream always rises to the top in professional sports. Montigo Moss — the son of Randy Moss — will get a chance to test that theory after accepting an invitation to participate in rookie minicamp for the Minnesota Vikings.
Montigo Moss Following Randy Moss’ Path
Montigo will have to fight his way onto the 53-man roster in Minnesota. He’s a long shot to end up on the Vikings’ Week 1 roster after going undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft and failing to sign a standard UDFA contract. Still, hope springs eternal this time of year.
KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson shared the news of Montigo accepting an invitation to participate in the Vikings’ rookie minicamp on April 29. In a heavily-shared social media post, Wilson included a college football highlight of Montigo hurdling a defender in space and then racing into the end zone for a touchdown. He’s wearing a No. 81 jersey, the same number his dad wore in New England.

The elder Moss spent his first eight seasons in Minnesota, where he earned the nickname “The Freak” for his raw athleticism. He was fast. He was smooth. He was virtually unguardable, especially with his insane ability to make one-handed catches.
Montigo flashed some of that same ability at the University of Maine, but it came only in spurts. He finished his college career with 143 total receptions for 1,692 yards and 16 touchdowns in 46 games played.
From Maine to Minnesota: Vikings Rookie Minicamp
While Montigo wasn’t invited to the NFL Combine, the 6-foot-1, 220-pounder did strut his stuff at his Maine Pro Day. Scouts from the New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens were in attendance and watched him make a “diving catch deep during a wide receiver drill,” according to the Bangor Daily News.
In 2024, Moss led the Black Bears in receptions (61) and receiving yards (722), while hauling in a team-best seven receiving scores. The 21-year-old receiver will now head to the Vikings’ rookie minicamp (starting on May 9) for a three-day tryout.
It’s quite a different journey for the young man known as “Tigo” to his friends and teammates. His father was the 21st overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft, whereas Tigo went undrafted. Still, all these years later, as Boston.com reported, Tigo is hoping to follow in his father’s footsteps to the NFL — “or wherever football takes me.”
