Puka Nacua Plans To Retire From NFL at Young Age

Nacua has expressed his intention to retire from the NFL by the age of 30, as he told FaZe Clan’s Swagg and Matcrackz’s podcast “Join The Lobby,”

“I know I want to retire at the age of 30,” Nacua said.

When asked why, Nacua cited a desire to emulate former teammate Aaron Donald and go out at the top of his game. “I think of Aaron Donald, like, ‘Man, to go out at the top, I think it would be super cool.’”

Beyond football, Nacua also expressed an aspiration to start a big family as another reason to hang the cleats up early —  he has five siblings as well.

“I want to have a big family — I want to have at least a starting five. I came from a big family. I need five boys for sure, but I want to be able to be a part of their lives and be as active as I can with them.”

Nacua, who has been in a public, long-term relationship with social media influencer Hallie Aiono since 2021, added that he worries about the toll the game could take on his body and his ability to stay active with his future children.

“Injuries are something that you can’t control, it’s part of the game,” Nacua said. “Hopefully, the rest of my career I’m healthy — but man, you have shoulder surgery … knee surgery … ankle [surgery,] and by the time my kids could be 18, I could be barely walking if [I] play the game and sustain injuries and stuff like that. But I want to retire early.”

Currently 23 and entering his third NFL season, Nacua’s plan would see him play for seven to eight years before retiring.  His on-field production suggests he could leave at the top. In 2023, he set the NFL rookie records for both receiving yards and receptions, leading to a Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro nod.

Last season, Nacua totaled 79 receptions for 990 yards and three touchdowns, despite playing just 11 games after spending time on injured reserve with a PCL sprain.

Nacua isn’t the first young player to consider an early exit. As awareness around long-term health risks like CTE and joint deterioration continues to grow, more players are weighing the benefits of shorter careers.

Whether Nacua ultimately sticks to his plan remains to be seen, but for now, he’s made his priorities clear.
