While the Los Angeles Rams (9-2) aren’t one of the teams going crazy to draft a quarterback in the first round, they know Matthew Stafford isn’t going to be around forever. Depending on how the rest of the season goes, Stafford could very well win the MVP award and get his team back to another Super Bowl.
Only time will tell, but PFSN’s Ian Cummings has the team taking a QB with their No. 63 overall pick. It shows that the position is far from at the top of their list, but it’s something head coach Sean McVay has in the back of his mind.
Los Angeles Rams To Look Beyond Matthew Stafford
That’s where Brendan Sorsby’s name comes to mind. He will have a chance to get his touchdown total higher than 79, but that’s a stellar number, all things considered.
With plenty of other QBs going ahead of him, Sorsby has a touchdown number that not many can compete with. The Cincinnati Bearcats are in good hands and have been with him under center these past two seasons.
After beginning his career at Indiana, one can only imagine how things would’ve gone if the Hoosiers had gone with Sorsby instead of Fernando Mendoza.
That’s something of a mystery, but it’s a fun topic to discuss. Both teams are more than thrilled with their QBs, but Sorsby is a third-round pick compared to Mendoza, who may be the first QB off the board.
Regardless, Sorsby is a player who will undoubtedly be drafted on Day 2. He’s thrown a career-high 24 passing touchdowns this season to just five interceptions. With nine more touchdowns on the ground this year, he’s combined for 33 touchdowns. Sorsby is one rushing touchdown shy of a career high, and that element of his game is something the Rams have never gotten out of Stafford.
That said, Stafford currently has a B- in PFSN’s QB Impact Metric. He’s easily a top-10 QB, with many arguing that he’s the MVP frontrunner this season. His touchdown-to-interception ratio is second to none, and that’s something Sorsby could greatly benefit from learning. His 57 TD to 18 INT ratio in college is sensational, but there’s always room to grow.
While Sorsby’s completion percentage is slightly down, he’s up to 8.3 yards per attempt, which is the highest of his career. He’s rushed for a career high 521 yards with an average 5.8 yards per attempt. Sorsby is a true dual-threat, and while that may not immediately translate to the NFL, it’s not like the Rams are asking him to be the Day 1 starter.
