The Cleveland Browns’ quarterback situation is starting to feel more like a circus than a position room. Even though they already have five quarterbacks on the roster, they just added a sixth, Tyler “Snoop” Huntley, making it the most crowded quarterback room in the league.
With six quarterbacks competing for spots, Cleveland will definitely need to make cuts before the season begins. An NFL insider has now shared an update on the team’s strategy moving forward.
NFL Insider Reveals Browns’ QB Plans as Shedeur Sanders Takes the Field in Preseason Opener
Most NFL teams carry no more than three quarterbacks on their final 53-man roster after preseason cuts. The Browns currently have five quarterbacks active: Huntley, Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Shedeur Sanders, and Dillon Gabriel.
Deshaun Watson is also part of the team but does not count against the roster while he recovers from an Achilles injury on injured reserve.
It’s reasonable to expect Cleveland will have to cut at least two quarterbacks before the season starts. The team drafted both Gabriel and Sanders in the 2025 NFL Draft.
While some have questioned Sanders’ future with the Browns, he’s getting the start in Cleveland’s preseason opener against the Panthers on August 8.
Although trimming the quarterback room by two players would make the most sense, NFL insider Adam Schefter doesn’t necessarily agree. He believes the Browns are more likely to begin the season carrying four quarterbacks, including both rookies.

“I actually now think the Browns are more likely than not to carry four quarterbacks on their final 53-man roster,” Schefter said. “Now, hear me out, I think both rookie quarterbacks are on the final 53-man roster.”
It’s an unusual strategy, but Schefter says he expects veteran Flacco to be the starter. The Browns would keep both rookies and Huntley or Pickett.
Schefter also notes that having a player like Pickett, who is only 27 years old, could give Cleveland a valuable trade asset during the season. This asset might be more useful than keeping an extra defensive lineman or offensive lineman on the roster.
“Kenny Pickett is still young. Kenny Pickett is a former first-round draft pick. Kenny Pickett is a quarterback,” Schefter said. “Teams that have a need at that position, if they suffer an injury, you think one of the first teams they would call would be the Cleveland Browns. Quarterbacks in his league are quarterbacks.”
Heading into the 2023 season, NBC’s Mike Florio reported that only 13 NFL teams carried more than two quarterbacks on their 53-man rosters.
Most teams kept two quarterbacks, while the rest carried three. Having four quarterbacks is unheard of, but Schefter points out that having an extra quarterback could make Cleveland a team’s first call if injuries occur.
The Browns are unlikely to be a strong team in 2025. However, gaining draft capital for the 2026 NFL Draft could help them trade up and finally secure a franchise quarterback, a player the team has been searching for seemingly forever.
