‘He’s Got To Stay Healthy’ — Ex-NFL QB Puts Pressure on Joe Burrow After Bengals’ Massive Dexter Lawrence Trade

Joe Burrow will have to cope with increased pressure following the Cincinnati Bengals' major defensive upgrade with the Dexter Lawrence trade.

The Cincinnati Bengals shook up the NFL by trading their 10th overall 2026 Draft pick to the New York Giants for standout defensive nose tackle Dexter Lawrence, signaling a bold move to challenge and support quarterback Joe Burrow.

Dexter Lawrence’s Arrival Puts Spotlight and Pressure on Joe Burrow at the Cincinnati Bengals

During “ESPN’s Get Up!” segment, Dan Orlovsky praised Lawrence’s arrival and noted that the pressure on Burrow will increase significantly starting in the 2026 season, following a year in which the loss of key players (most notably Trey Hendrickson) affected the team’s overall performance.

“This is abnormal for this organization. We’ve been (I’ve been) very critical of them, but you got to give tip your hat to them. They are going all in now. The pressure immediately goes to Joe, and I agree with Shefty in regards to the question mark of the future, and you know, Cincinnati’s got to prove itself.”

“No bigger fan and champion of Joe Burrow than me. Now, he’s got to stay healthy. He’s got to perform at a high level. They have committed a ton of money to the guys that he wanted rightfully. So they have not drafted a defensive proler. I actually they’ve drafted one defensive pro bowler since 2010, they have now spent more money in the last in for agency in the last like five years.”

The central purpose of this trade was to send a strong message to the QB, who had repeatedly hinted at his dissatisfaction with Cincinnati’s lack of greater ambition throughout last season. Precisely for this reason, Orlovsky warned that Burrow will now face extra pressure heading into 2026.

With Lawrence’s arrival, optimism is growing about an improved defense compared to last season (who ranks No. 28 in the PFSN Defense Impact metric with a C grade), which could renew locker-room enthusiasm and help balance responsibilities between offense and defense, a key issue that affected the Bengals in 2025.

Given his performance last season, Lawrence is currently the best nose tackle in the NFL, having led the league in quarterback pressures when lined up in the middle of the line (108 pressures over the past four years), far outpacing players like Vita Vea.

His presence on the team will force opposing offensive players to double-team him, freeing up other Bengals defenders to pressure the QB more freely.

Historically, the Bengals are a team that rarely trades high draft picks for veteran players, making this the first time in franchise history that they have traded a “Top 10” pick for a ready-made player. In other words, this signals a departure from a long-term plan to develop the team, with the goal of strengthening the franchise on its path to the Super Bowl.
