It is somewhat surprising to see the Panthers as favorites. Carolina has really struggled to have any consistency from their QB position. Sam Darnold hasn’t played much this preseason. Unless Darnold is going to play significant time in Week 3 of the preseason, it would be a surprise to see the Panthers competing hard.
The reason for that is the Steelers still have a lot to settle on their roster. While Mike Tomlin has been non-committal around which starters will play this week, they have generally taken this preseason quite seriously. If we see the Steelers willing to play several high-caliber players into the second quarter, this could be a blowout.
The total at 36.5 feels a touch high given what we have seen from the Panthers’ offense so far this year. However, the Steelers’ offense has averaged 25 points through the first two weeks and could do so again. That potential makes it hard to play the under with any confidence.
