Patriots Reportedly Had Strong Competition for Romeo Doubs: ‘It Was Very Close in the End’

Patriots beat their competition to sign Romeo Doubs on a $70M deal, giving Drake Maye a new weapon in New England’s evolving offense.

The New England Patriots have a new wide receiver, signing former Green Bay Packers receiver Romeo Doubs to a four-year, $70 million deal. However, New England wasn’t the only team circling around the receiver.

Patriots Emerged Real Winners in the Tight Race for Romeo Doubs

Several reports say the Washington Commanders were close to signing the former Green Bay Packers receiver before he picked the Patriots.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz said the Commanders had real momentum in their efforts to sign Doubs and that the decision came down to the last moments.

ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler gave a similar update, saying both teams made offers and Doubs took time to consider his choices.

Fowler wrote: “Romeo Doubs was considering the Patriots and Commanders are his primary options. Both had competing offers out. He decided on New England — and Drake Maye.”

In 2025, Doubs, like Diggs, led his wide receiver room in receptions. Catching passes from quarterback Jordan Love, Doubs hauled in 55 receptions for 724 yards and 6 touchdowns (77.9 PFSN’s NFL Wide Receiver Impact grades).

Doubs has played all four of his NFL seasons for Green Bay. He has 202 career receptions for 2,424 career receiving yards and 21 touchdowns. The Patriots hope Doubs can step in as a suitable replacement for wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who is no longer with the franchise.

He also showed up in the playoffs, including an eight-catch, 124-yard performance in Green Bay’s postseason loss to the Chicago Bears this past January.

Doubs joins the Patriots at a time when they need more help at wide receiver. The team recently released veteran Stefon Diggs, creating a big gap in their offense.

Doubs is now part of a group with DeMario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins, Kyle Williams, and Efton Chism III, and he’s expected to play a big role right from the start. The Patriots have been busy early in free agency, keeping up their building around Maye.

Besides signing Doubs, New England also brought in guard Alijah Vera-Tucker on a three-year, $42 million contract and defensive lineman Dre’Mont Jones on a three-year, $39.5 million deal.

A.J. Brown would give the Patriots a true No. 1 receiver right away, but reports say Philadelphia wants a lot in return. Signing Doubs gives New England another strong option as they decide whether to keep chasing a big trade.
