‘The Whole League Knew ’ — Patriots Analyst Argues Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini Scandal Was Open Secret Around NFL

As the Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini scandal remains in the spotlight, one analyst believes it was common knowledge in the NFL.

Over the past month, arguably the biggest story in the entire NFL has been the scandal involving New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel and reporter Dianna Russini. Even throughout the 2026 NFL Draft, this controversy dominated headlines and the public’s attention.

It seems as if new information is surfacing each and every day. The latest update comes from a Patriots radio analyst, who is speculating that the relationship between Vrabel and Russini was well known in league circles.

Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini’s Relationship Was Common Knowledge

This saga began when pictures of the two surfaced at an Arizona resort. Since then, Russini has tried to paint it as a happenstance that the two were at the same place at the same time. She recently resigned from her role at The Athletic, while Vrabel alluded to “difficult conversations” with the Patriots and his family.

Moreover, the head coach wasn’t present during the third day of the 2026 NFL Draft to enter counseling with his family. Now, as new photographs surfaced showing Vrabel and Russini together as far back as 2020, and additional details surface — like that the pair hosted a day-drinking party at last month’s league meetings in front of many NFL head coaches and their wives — it’s starting to feel like this relationship was an open secret.

Adam Jones of the “Jones & Keefe” on WEEI echoed this sentiment.

“I’m just starting to think the whole league kinda knew what was going on, and everybody kind of just chose to look the other way,” Jones said.

“I find it hard to believe the whole league is gossiping about Vrabel and Russini and what they’re up to, and it’s been going on for at least six years, and the Patriots had no idea.”

However, Jones also believed that the story, as a known factor in the NFL world, could ultimately work in Vrabel’s favor.

“I think [it’s] a good thing for Vrabel because if the Patriots and the Krafts were blindsided by this, that is where Vrabel could get in some trouble,” he said.

“If they had an idea of what was going on, and they asked Vrabel about it and were like ‘come clean,’ and he told the truth? Then, that’s probably why he’s here, and he’s prominent on the first two days of the draft, and they’re standing by him on some level. If they were blindsided, he might not still have his job.”

This lines up with what Hall of Famer Cris Carter recently said. Carter has some unique insight on this situation as a retired NFL legend, ex-ESPN employee, and the spouse of someone with deep ties in the media world’s makeup and wardrobe departments.

“I have an unusual amount of information on this particular subject,” Carter admitted, before adding: “No one was surprised by the information.”

Reporter Pablo Torre, who is acquaintances with Russini and previously worked alongside her at ESPN, made a similar comment.

“All of these head coaches across the pool and their wives, I’m told, started talking about Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini,” Torre stated about the aforementioned day-drinking party. “And this is days before the photos broke in the New York Post… Their friendship was not breaking news to the people at the owners’ meetings. They all knew. In fact, they were out front together at this other competing aspirational party.”

Vrabel is expected to remain New England’s head coach, as they have publicly backed him and the NFL has made it clear that there won’t be an investigation, as they are viewing this as a personal matter.

While Vrabel’s job is likely safe, this scandal has transcended sports and shows no signs of slowing down, so it will be quite some time before the news cycle shifts to something different, especially if new info continues to surface.

Drake Maye Shows Support for Vrabel

Despite the noise surrounding the situation, the Patriots’ players, including Drake Maye, remain fully supportive of their head coach.

“We’re here for Coach, we love Coach,” Maye said about Vrabel. “What he does for us, what he’s done for us this past year, you can’t speak into words. Thankful he’s our head coach. Know he’s dealing with some off the field and out of the coaching world, but we’re here for him, and I know he’s gonna come back.”

Apart from the star quarterback, two veterans, Hunter Henry and Robert Spillane, were also asked about Vrabel.

“I thought he did a great job. It’s been the same Vrabes, bringing a lot of that energy in the room. Obviously, he addressed it, and that’s kind of all I’ll say about it,” Henry said.

“Coach coaches football. He keeps the main thing the main thing. So I know he’s dealing with personal issues, but when we’re in the building, we speak football,” Spillane said. “I love coach, and I’m going to be there to support him as he would be there to support me through everything. I’m just a player, and I’m trying to do that as best I can.”

Vrabel has addressed the media twice since the scandal broke, acknowledging that he’s had “difficult” yet “positive and productive” conversations with his family and team.
