Patriots QB Depth Chart: A Look at Drake Maye’s Backup Amid MVP Candidate’s Injury Concerns

Who is Patriots' backup QB and third string QB behind Drake Maye? Here's everything you need to know about the Patriots QB Depth Chart ahead of Super Bowl 60.

Drake Maye is set to start his first Super Bowl when the New England Patriots face the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl 60, but his health has become one of the week’s biggest storylines.

The second-year quarterback has dealt with speculation about a right shoulder injury and was recently listed on the injury report with both a shoulder issue and an illness. He has been a full participant in practice leading up to the game and has said he is feeling good, yet any concern about his status naturally shifts attention to the Patriots’ quarterback depth chart on the eve of the NFL’s biggest stage.

Who Is the Patriots’ Backup QB? Depth Chart Behind Drake Maye For Super Bowl

The Patriots’ backup quarterback for Super Bowl 60 is Joshua Dobbs, a 31-year-old veteran who signed with New England in the offseason.

He will be the primary reserve behind Maye against Seattle, with Tommy DeVito serving as the third-string option and emergency quarterback on the 53-man roster. That trio gives New England a mix of high-ceiling youth in Maye and experienced depth behind him.

Maye, 23, has an opportunity to make history in his Super Bowl debut. He will become the second youngest quarterback to start a Super Bowl behind Dan Marino and could break Ben Roethlisberger’s mark as the youngest starting quarterback to win the Lombardi Trophy.

He also enters the game nursing what has been described as a minor injury to his throwing shoulder, which the team says is not expected to be serious, even though he practiced fully in the buildup to kickoff. Maye is ranked second with a -A rating and a 91.1% QB impact score as per the PFSN NFL QB Impact Metric, highlighting his consistency throughout the season.

Behind him, Dobbs brings recent starting experience from multiple teams, while DeVito has a run of starts with the New York Giants on his resume before joining New England. Multiple outlets list the Patriots’ depth chart for Super Bowl 60 as: starter Maye, backup Dobbs, and third stringer DeVito.

Joshua Dobbs

Dobbs is the Patriots’ backup quarterback and will hold that role behind Maye in Super Bowl 60. A former Tennessee standout, he entered the NFL as a mid-round pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2017 draft and has since spent time with nine different organizations, including the Titans, Cardinals, and Vikings.

His first real opportunity to showcase himself came late in the 2022 season with Tennessee, when he started games under then-coach Mike Vrabel.

Dobbs has made 15 NFL starts and carries a 3–12 record, completing 62.8% of his passes for 3,346 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions, while adding 515 rushing yards and eight scores on 110 carries.

He has also appeared in limited duty for New England this season, completing 7 of 10 passes for 65 yards. Known for his mobility and intelligence, Dobbs majored in aerospace engineering at Tennessee and picked up the “Passtronaut” nickname during his 2023 run as a starter with Arizona and Minnesota.

Tommy DeVito

DeVito is listed as the Patriots’ third-string quarterback behind Maye and Dobbs. New England claimed DeVito off waivers from the New York Giants on the eve of the 2025 season after the Giants released him during final roster cuts.

Since arriving in Foxborough, he has functioned as the team’s emergency quarterback and has not yet been active for a Patriots game heading into Super Bowl 60.

DeVito, 27, made his NFL debut with the Giants as an undrafted free agent out of Illinois in 2023. He quickly became a fan favorite in New York while starting eight games, posting a 3-5 record. Across 12 career appearances, he has completed 65.3% of his passes for 1,358 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions.

If injuries forced the Patriots beyond Maye and Dobbs against Seattle, DeVito would be the next in line as New England’s third option under center.
