Patriots Predicted To Sign All-Pro WR in Free Agency After Stefon Diggs’ Departure From New England

After Stefon Diggs’ exit, Patriots could target Deebo Samuel: short-term veteran, versatile YAC help for Drake Maye in 2026.

The New England Patriots are expected to explore several options at wide receiver this offseason after parting ways with veteran Stefon Diggs. With quarterback Drake Maye developing as a franchise player, adding an experienced offensive weapon should be at the front of everyone’s minds.

Why Deebo Samuel Could Make Sense for New England Patriots

New England’s offense showed flashes of potential during the 2025 season, but the lack of consistent playmakers at wide receiver remained an issue. While younger receivers continue to develop, the Patriots could look to free agency for a veteran who can contribute immediately.

One name that has surfaced in early projections is wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr., who is expected to hit the open market after spending the 2025 season with the Washington Commanders.

Samuel joined Washington before the 2025 season after a trade from the San Francisco 49ers, where he spent his first six NFL seasons. His role with the Commanders was different from his prime years in San Francisco, but he still produced solid numbers.

In 16 games in 2025, he recorded 72 receptions for 727 yards and five touchdowns, also contributing as a rushing option in some offensive packages. He was able to line up in the backfield but also in the slot, which helped elevate the offense.

Across seven NFL seasons, Samuel has recorded 5,519 receiving yards and over 1,200 rushing yards. These numbers highlight the dual-threat ability that makes him one of the league’s most dynamic playmakers earlier in his career. He ranked 34th in the PFSN NFL WR Impact metrics with an impact score of 77.2.

For the Patriots, Samuel’s versatility could be an interesting addition to the offense. Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels incorporates a lot of motion into his scheme, and offenses that feature a lot of movement have historically benefited from a receiver like Samuel.

Even as his production has declined from his prime seasons, Samuel still brings physicality and yards-after-the-catch ability that can help extend drives and create explosive plays.

Since Samuel is 30 years old, he would likely be seen as a short-term veteran addition rather than a long-term centerpiece for the Patriots’ offense. Still, that role could be valuable for a team trying to stay competitive in the AFC.

Free agency officially begins on March 11, and Samuel is expected to draw interest from several teams looking to add veteran playmakers. If New England pursues the former All-Pro receiver, it could be a move to add experience. The versatility Samuel brings would add significant production to an offense still searching for consistent playmakers.
