‘He’s Talking Trash’ — Patriots Super Bowl Champion Reveals Whether Dianna Russini Scandal Has Impacted Mike Vrabel

Jason McCourty reveals Mike Vrabel is "himself" at Patriots OTAs, talking trash and coaching through the Dianna Russini scandal fallout.

The Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini scandal has been the story of the New England Patriots’ offseason. Since Page Six published photographs of Vrabel and Dianna Russini at a Sedona resort on April 7, New England’s preparation for the 2026 season has been overshadowed by questions that have nothing to do with football.

Russini resigned from The Athletic in April, while Vrabel stepped away from the team to seek counseling and missed the third day of the NFL Draft. Legitimate concerns emerged about whether the head coach could command the attention of a locker room while his personal life dominated national headlines.

Jason McCourty Says Mike Vrabel Is ‘Himself’ at Patriots OTAs

With OTAs now underway, Jason McCourty, who won a Super Bowl with the Patriots, offered the first real indication that Vrabel hasn’t let the noise change him on the practice field. He addressed the situation on ESPN’s “Get Up.”

“When it comes to the football part, especially now, this time of the year, OTAs are starting, guys are out there actually practicing, and Vrabel has been out there as loud as he always is,” McCourty said. “I was talking to Mike Reiss, who’s a reporter down there, talked to Milton Williams after practice, he said Vrabel is himself. He’s out there, he’s talking trash to the guys. He’s loud. He’s coaching.”

“So, as we get closer and closer to football, I think the distraction moves further away, and the focus becomes X’s and O’s,” McCourty added about Vrabel.

Vrabel himself addressed the media at the start of OTAs, doing what he could to turn the page.

The NFL has already declined to investigate the scandal under its personal conduct policy, and the Patriots have publicly backed their coach throughout the fallout. However, Mike Florio noted that Vrabel gave a peculiar answer when asked whether he would need to step away again before the season, leaving some ambiguity about whether the situation is fully behind him.

McCourty’s comments about Vrabel are encouraging, but the real pressure hasn’t arrived yet. According to PFSN, the Patriots have the fourth-toughest schedule in the AFC, a significant change from the easy schedule that helped fuel their 14-3 record in the regular season.

If new details about the Vrabel-Russini situation surface during training camp, the distraction could escalate quickly. The Patriots lost key contributors like Stefon Diggs and K’Lavon Chaisson this offseason, and the margin for error is thinner than it was a year ago.

The Patriots open the season with a Super Bowl 60 rematch against the Seattle Seahawks, and all the pressure will be on Vrabel as everyone will be tuned in to see whether he can coach the team effectively amid the noise around him.
