‘The Only Thing Left’ — NFL Analyst Reveals Why Mike Vrabel Could Take Another Break Amid Dianna Russini Scandal

Mike Florio reveals the one unresolved thread that could force Mike Vrabel into another break amid the Dianna Russini scandal.

Mike Vrabel stepped to the podium before New England’s first OTA on Wednesday, refusing to promise anything about potentially taking another break from the team.

“Anything could happen,” the Patriots head coach said. Mike Florio and Chris Simms picked apart that line and identified the reason that could prompt Vrabel to take some time away from the team again before the season starts.

Mike Florio Points To the One Development That Could Hurt Mike Vrabel

It’s been seven-plus weeks since the scandal involving Vrabel and Dianna Russini has been in the headlines, and one thread still hangs over everything. Florio feels the story isn’t finished. On “Pro Football Talk,” he argued the one thing that still hasn’t happened is Russini speaking publicly. There’s been nothing but silence on her part, as people build narratives around the two parties.

“The one thing that has yet to happen is that Dianna Russini has yet to tell her story, and we have no idea,” Florio said. “There’s no indication. There’s been nothing. No leaks, no scoops.”

Florio’s tell came from Jon “Stugotz” Weiner, who knows Russini, said on air that it’s her story to tell in her own time. Florio read that as a signal that it’s coming.

“That implies that she will,” Florio said about Russini potentially speaking up. “That’s the moment that I said, ‘Uh oh, there’s going to be a chapter of this that is very public and very interesting because she’s going to tell her story at some point.’ That’s the next thing. That’s the only thing left.”

When and whether Russini’s word goes public? It could be anyone’s guess. Even Florio didn’t put a clock on it. But he was blunt, since if this really happened, the stakes couldn’t be higher. It could push Vrabel into another leave before the 2026 season, possibly longer.

“So yeah, that could come up, and that could create a situation where Mike Vrabel could end up yet again having to take a break from the team to try to restore the balance between his work life and his personal life,” Florio concluded.

Mike Vrabel Only Wants To Focus on the Patriots

Vrabel hadn’t faced the media since late April, and Wednesday’s session at Gillette Stadium was his first since he skipped Day 3 of the 2026 NFL Draft for counseling.

He kept his personal life largely out of the briefing, offering only that he loves his wife, Jen Vrabel, and his sons before steering the conversation back toward football.

An important moment from the media briefing came when he was asked whether he’s anticipating missing any more time this offseason.

“I mean, I can only tell you I’m gonna be there today, and I can’t tell you anything other than I’m gonna be out there today in full force,” Vrabel said. “And I mean that because, you know, who knows what’s gonna come up?… You know, anything could happen. And so I’m gonna focus on today.”

To this point, neither party has spoken in any real detail about the matter, and the lack of a clear public response has done nothing to slow the chatter around the league.

It’s a complication the Patriots didn’t sign up for. They handed Vrabel the keys to rebuild a franchise still finding its footing in the years since Bill Belichick departed, and instead of that being the headline, an off-field saga has hovered over his opening offseason. Whether it bleeds into the season as a genuine distraction is the open question now.

For Russini, the fallout has been its own kind of reversal. She built a reputation as one of the league’s most trusted reporters, and now the coverage trails her private life rather than her work. She even resigned from her position as an NFL insider at The Athletic in April 2026, during an ongoing internal investigation.

Vrabel and Russini, both married to other people, were captured in photos released by Page Six at a resort in Arizona. TMZ added fuel to the fire with video footage from a boat the two rented in Tennessee in 2021.
