The Kansas City Chiefs might be on the search for a new offensive coordinator if current OC Matt Nagy happens to land a new head coaching job. Before joining the Chiefs and working under head coach Andy Reid, Nagy was the Bears’ head coach.
Patrick Mahomes Offers Thoughts on Chiefs OC Matt Nagy
As the Bears’ head coach, Nagy finished with a 34-31 record there and won NFL Coach of the Year honors back in 2018. So, Nagy does have some previous head coaching experience with a number of teams, including the Tennessee Titans, who might want Nagy on board to help them find success once again.
Therefore, what does Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes think about Nagy and his time as offensive coordinator for the Chiefs?
On Thursday, Charles Goldman, Conference Managing Editor for A to Z Sports and a former writer for Chiefs Wire, posted on X comments that Mahomes made about Nagy.
“I love Coach Nagy…,” Mahomes said. “He gave me a lot of ideas to be better as a person and as a quarterback… Wishing him the best throughout this head-coaching process…”

When referring to what the Chiefs should look for regarding an offensive coordinator, Mahomes said, “Obviously, there’s names out there… With the vacancies at the head-coaching job, you’ve kind of got to wait it out to build a staff.”
According to the PFSN NFL Offense Impact metrics, measured throughout the regular season, the Chiefs’ offense had an impact score of 74.3 and graded out to a C-. They averaged 5.1 yards per play on offense this season. The Chiefs had a 42.2% rate on third- and fourth-down conversions.
The Chiefs scored 57.6% of the time they reached the red zone. But the Chiefs’ offense also turned the ball over 15 times, too. It also produced 23 passing touchdowns and 15 rushing touchdowns. The Chiefs’ offense also accounted for 12 interceptions.
Nagy is in his second tenure as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, having held the role in 2017 before joining the Bears. He began his NFL career with the Philadelphia Eagles in various roles before becoming the Chiefs’ quarterbacks coach in 2013. After playing in Chicago, Nagy returned to the Chiefs as quarterbacks coach in 2022 before serving as offensive coordinator for the last three seasons.
Now, the Chiefs will wait and see if Nagy accepts a new head coaching role in the NFL before potentially looking for a new offensive coordinator.
