Patrick Mahomes Breaks Silence on Chiefs HC Andy Reid’s Controversial 4th Down Decision vs. Texans

What did Patrick Mahomes think about head coach Andy Reid's 4th-down call on Sunday Night Football? Find out how the QB feels about the call.

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to struggle this season. After a tough start against powerhouse teams, it was thought that they would turn things around and go after the AFC West. However, 14 games into the campaign, the Chiefs have little to be optimistic about, and their play-calling isn’t looking much better.

Their most recent loss on Sunday Night Football saw another instance of a botched play call.

Patrick Mahomes Responds To Chiefs HC Andy Reid’s Bizarre 4th-Quarter Call

The Chiefs trailed 17-10 with 05:31 left in the fourth quarter when Mahomes and the offense faced a 4th-and-4 on their own 41. While many thought it would’ve been strategically smart to punt the ball away and pin back the Texans, Reid made the call to go for it.

Mahomes dropped back to pass, and with the rush pressing, he stepped up, looking for wideout Rashee Rice. However, Rice was unable to keep hold, turning over the possession.

After the game, the quarterback was asked about Reid’s call on fourth down, and Mahomes stuck to his guns, backing the head coach’s decision. Rob Collins tweeted his response on X, writing: “Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes on going for it on 4th down from their own 31 yard line: ‘I’ll never question the decision to go for it on 4th down.'”

The Texans never recorded a scoring drive of more than 31 yards in the second half, which supports an argument for punting it and pinning CJ Stroud and the offense back late in the game.

Stroud didn’t have an impressive performance on the day, posting a QBR of 80.4 with 203 yards and one touchdown. His pass completion rate, however, is what haunted his efficiency, as he completed only 15 of his 31 throws.

Not a single running back had more than 70 rushing yards, either. The offense leaned heavily on wideout Nico Collins, who secured 121 yards on four catches. Houston’s defense, on the other hand, had a massive impact on the win. It held the Chiefs to only 148 passing yards.

Cornerback Kamari Lassiter had a team-high five solo tackles. Defensive tackle Tommy Togiai was also on fire, securing 10 total tackles, two quarterback hits, one sack, and one tackle for a loss.

The Texans will aim to maintain their momentum when they host the Arizona Cardinals in Week 15. The Cardinals are struggling to do much with Jacoby Brissett under center, and Houston’s defense, which is ranked No. 1 on PFSN’s Defensive Impact Metrics, will once again look to wreak havoc.
