Panthers Predicted To Trade Xavier Legette To Acquire $70,000,000 Playmaker

ESPN’s Bill Barnwell proposes the Carolina Panthers trade Xavier Legette for $70,000,000 playmaker from the Indianapolis Colts.

The Carolina Panthers are entering a defining offseason around quarterback Bryce Young. Winning the division at 8–9 showed progress, but it also reinforced how far this roster still has to go before it can seriously contend. That urgency has led to outside proposals that would reshape the wide receiver room. One ESPN trade idea would send Xavier Legette to Indianapolis in exchange for a big name.

ESPN Floats Panthers Trade for Michael Pittman Jr.

In a recent ESPN offseason piece outlining trade proposals that could work for both sides, Bill Barnwell suggested the Panthers acquire Michael Pittman Jr. from the Colts.

The framework would send Pittman and a 2026 seventh-round pick to Carolina, while Indianapolis would receive Legette and a 2026 fifth-rounder.

Pittman signed a three-year extension worth roughly $70 million, including a $22 million salary in 2026. None of that 2026 money is guaranteed, which makes him movable for Indianapolis. From a pure résumé standpoint, there is no comparison between Pittman and Legette. Pittman has been the more productive and reliable receiver throughout his career.

His numbers have dipped recently, falling from 1,152 yards in 2023 to 808 in 2024 and 784 in 2025. His yards per route run ranking dropped from 24th to 43rd and then 44th during that stretch. Even so, he remains a 6-foot-4 target with proven NFL production. Pittman ranked 50th in PFSN’s Wide Receiver Impact Metric this season.

For Carolina, the appeal is clear. Young, Jalen Coker, and Tetairoa McMillan are all on rookie contracts. Adding a veteran wideout with size and experience could stabilize a group that still lacks consistent reliability.

What Moving Xavier Legette Would Signal for Carolina

Trading Legette would be an admission that development has not matched expectations.

Across two seasons, Legette has totaled 84 receptions for 860 yards and 7 touchdowns. According to PFSN, he posted a 64.6 PFSN WR Impact Score in 2025, ranking 100th in the league. The flashes have been there, but the consistency has not.

NFL legend Chad Johnson recently said Legette is “special” and plans to work with him this offseason, believing there is another level to unlock. At 25 years old and owed just $4.4 million over the next two seasons, Legette still represents upside at a manageable cost.

The Panthers drafted McMillan in the first round last year, signaling some concern about Legette’s trajectory. Acquiring a $70,000,000 playmaker like Pittman would shift strategy.

Carolina won its division because the NFC South is weak. The question is whether Young’s development is better served by patience or by adding a veteran receiver who has already shown he can handle WR1 responsibilities.
