Packers DC Jeff Hafley Fuels Rumors of Becoming NFC Team’s Next HC With Latest Comments

The Green Bay Packers are in a tough spot. After entering the 2025-26 season with high expectations, the team has stumbled to a 5-3-1 record through 10 weeks, leaving them in third place in the NFC North. The pressure is mounting on the entire organization, from the front office to the coaching staff.

Following two straight losses, much of the attention has shifted to the coaching staff, where significant changes could be on the horizon. While head coach Matt LaFleur’s future is a major topic of discussion, recent comments from defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley have ignited speculation that he could be on the move.

Jeff Hafley’s Time With the Packers Could Come to an End

Hafley began his coaching journey in 2001 as a running backs coach for WPI and first entered the NFL in 2012 as an assistant with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After several years in the league and a return to the college ranks at Ohio State and Boston College, he took over as the defensive coordinator for the Packers in 2024. His impact was felt almost immediately.

Before his arrival, Green Bay’s defense ranked 17th on PFSN’s Defense Impact metric. Under Hafley’s guidance, the unit has climbed to 11th. While that positive trend could continue, there is a growing belief that he might be in line for another promotion, one that would take him out of Green Bay.

The timing of these rumors is noteworthy, as the Packers face a critical game against the New York Giants, a franchise that just fired its head coach.

Adding another layer to the situation, Hafley is a New Jersey native, and his name is now being watched closely for the permanent head coaching role in New York. He may have given more weight to those rumors himself when speaking to the media about the upcoming matchup.

Hafley revealed that he bought 30 tickets for the game, as much of his family, including his mother, will be in attendance. “It’ll be nice, it’ll be a chance to get close to home and see some family that I haven’t seen in a while,” he said.

However, it was his final two sentences that truly grabbed everyone’s attention. “I have a lot of memories of Giants Stadium growing up as a kid. It will be a cool experience to coach there.” Given the Giants’ search for a new head coach, Hafley’s name is now one to monitor.

With previous head coaching experience during his tenure at Boston College, he is not a stranger to leading a team. It will be interesting to see how the next few months unfold as the Giants organization searches for a new voice to lead them from the sideline.
